aight i was peepin some shit from jay-z (link: http://www.hiphoprx.com/2009/06/14/j...ke-soulja-boy/)
and right here, jay-z says that soulja boi really cant listen to jay's shit, cause he cant understand 'the feelings/emotions from the places jay-z's been through' and vice versa for jay on soulja boi's shit so my question to yall is what does that mean to a casual listener or fan........we aint sell dope, we aint gangsters, does that mean we cant feel what jay-z, kool g rap, scarface is sayin........ |

I don't think its so much understanding his emotions, as it was Soulja Boy saying that he flat out couldn't understand Jay's rhymes, lol. He just now is starting to get lines like "I'm Jackie Robinson...I jack, I rob, I sin." So I think it's about something being relevant to one's interests, not necessarily to someone's personal life experiences. Which is why most of us still enjoy the music of Scarface, Jay, etc.
Of course Jay ain't gonna sit around listening to Soulja Boy albums, 'cause what interest does he have listening to a bunch of kiddie dance records.

i think ATI hit the nail on the head. what emotion is there in sb's music? what wordplay is there? it's pretty much just music to mindlessly dance/try to get pussy to. It doesn't have any depth. personally, i think some of the stuff Jay puts out could fit into that category, but many people disagree. he does have some nice wordplay on occasion, though, and that's what separates him and others like him (those artists you mentioned are good examples) apart from soulja boy and rappers like him
