^^^^^^
For starters, GZA has the most boring flow ever. Seriously.. I couldn't even go thru some of his tracks for the full thing... it's just emotionless talking over a beat. Beats were pretty good... lyrics were ok for GZA.. nothing amazing. I need to go thru it again, but first listen it was anything but amazing.

Shut the fuck up ya'll, Nok has a point. I know GZA kills it with the lyrics, since day one. But his flow, sometimes even on Liquid Swords gets boring. Put it this way, if you needed to get the songs mood without wanting to turn up the volume too much, or maybe not paying much attention, GZA shit would be no good at all. But then again, yall can say thats not his style and shit, but Nok was talkin about the flow.
ps: I do like GZA's flow, but it is kind of boring at times and a MC has to entertain on the mic, sometimes rhymes ain't enough.

^ I guess that's where we differ. I never find GZA's flow boring, I find it chill and relaxing, and unlike other emcees, not rushed. Shit sounds natural, but most heads are repelled by this since it's different than any other emcee.
Originality is dope, stop fakin' the funk and get off GZA's dick.

How could I get on his dick in the first place? You never gave me a chance.
(I had to say something) But I ain't saying I dont enjoy GZA's flow, I'm saying if the mood aint right, that nigga will put me to sleep faster than a rabbit gets fucked.

^ I'm not saying the album was wack, if you were referring to me. I'm calling it a disappointment. GZA's flow for the most part was extremely boring. That '0% Finance' track was atrocious. Shit like that puts me to sleep, b..... regardless of who it is.
And I co-sign iLL, I like the Paper Plates track.. that was one of the better tracks from the album. I was feeling that shit since day 1. But on a overall outlook, shit is weak for a GZA joint. Ya'll could hate... but it's my opinion. note: I can't stand GZA's flow on this album specifically... not overall. LOTLS is my shit... love that album. Same for LS and BTS.

Respectin' a legend for his accomplishments is one thing, but sayin' somethin' is dope because it's by a certain artist is fuckin' borderline buffoonery. Now, I haven't given this a thorough listen, so it'd be premature to drop my thoughts on it, but labels like "real hip-hop," don't mean shit if the music's shit. I'm not willin' to be more lenient on a record 'cause "it's that real shit and I gotta respect it, 'cause real niggas recognize real". I'm a fan first and I got standards that gotta be met.

But Pro Tools is a disappointing addition to his great catalog. Most obvious, his flow has clearly deteriorated; his flow has never been that diverse, but it was always sharp and perfectly on point with the beat. Now, it's lazy, monotonous, and flat out boring. Another huge problem in general is the lack of relevance his music has. You don't have to be popular or chase trends to be musically relevant, but GZA hasn't branched out lyrically, and more importantly, musically- he's mastered using dark, Shaolin- influenced music throughout his career, but that ain't gonna cut it anymore, especially when it ain't even as good as RZA & Mathematic's old shit...most of the beats are simplistic and unoriginal. Not to mention some flat out terrible choices...among them 'Paper Plates,' guest rapper Ka, and the featuring of a live acapella that is better than anything on the album, using guest verses that sound like they were recorded in the back of a bus, and rapping like a new-jack textee ('0% Finance') The album isn't terrible, some of the beats are pretty good, and GZA's lyrical skills are still present, but he should have kept this a compilation, 'cause this shit is mediocre and forgettable. p.s. lol at dudes acting like this new flow he be kicking is classic GZA style, it's not, there's a line between calm, smooth, and a lazy drawl, and GZA done past that line, his flow and overall rapping skill isn't what it used to be

^ Lmao. That's the problem with underground heads. The fuck you gotta compare it to other shit for? Just because it isn't "classic GZA" aka Liquid Swords, doesn't mean that the album isn't good. If you're gonna rate it, then rate it for what it is. Take into account that it's a different time and there's different factors manipulating the overall sound, so comparing it to prior material is worthless and irrelevant. And I don't think anyone is gonna debate that his flow hasn't drastically changed (except new jacks), for better or for worse, it's been just about the same. I find shit refreshing. And for the record, ATI, aren't you the one who said 36 Chambers and Liquid Swords is overrated? You shouldn't even be allowed to have an opinion on the subject.

cause three paragraphs of critiquing isn't enough stand-alone reasons for why the album isn't good, I already explained in context why this album isn't good AT THIS POINT in time...the only reason I compared his present flow to past is because you were making it seem as though GZA's delivery has always been as lazy as this...let's face it, if we were really judging this album solely on artistic merit, nobody would check it, GZA warrants a listen based on what he's previously done
and I've never said Liquid Swords is overrated, seeing as it's a top 5 album, and yea, I said 36 Chambers is overrated, cause it ain't even the best Wu album, much less the best hip-hop album, period. But then again, 'hip-hop heads' always cry when someone realizes that early Wu-Tang isn't the peek of hip-hop achievement p.s. and please explain how mentioning his old work is irrelevant when his biggest problem is that he's music is still stuck in the 90's, attempting and failing to capture his old glory?

MD spoke the real i completely agree wit Illogic about comparing to the time period for reviewing an album.....its when you take account to "greatest albums of all-time", then you should compare to the artist's past works....you should also compare to the artist's past work as a guide, but most of the time, by doing so you are only limiting what you think of the album....for instance, Nas' only hot album every 10 year average Quote:
