04/02/08 - Recap from Tonight's Heart of the City Concert (Jay-Z & MJB)

So at the last minute, I was able to score a pair of Jay-Z/Mary J Blige concert tickets for 80$ a pop, half the price of the tickets' face value, so I was reasonably close up....yes, I know, the pics suck, but what can you do

Thankfully The Dream didn't show up (he was opening some of the other concert dates), so shit started at around 8.

Both Jay and MJB came out together to kick things off with the classic "Can't Knock the Hustle," before MJB started her solo set. I really like MJB's songs and albums, but I wasn't sure whether she'd be able to pull off her vocally-difficult songs well live...well I was wrong, she's a damn good vocalist live, almost as on point as on record...She performed old classics like "You Remind Me," "No More Drama," "Real Love," etc. and got a great reaction for her bigger hits, but she really took over the crowd when she bust out Ye's "Flashing Lights," before closing with "Be Without You," and a couple singles from her most recent album.

Then after a montage of the two artists describing what they admire about each other, Jay came out to "Roc Boys," and from the get, he had the crowd standing, and it stayed that way for the rest of his set. He went through everthing from the American Gangster singles to "Big Pimpin," "Song Cry" (with Mary), "Public Service Announcement," "99 Problems" "Dead Presidents," and many more timeless cuts, at one point even joking with the crowd by playing snippets from about a dozen hit records of his, before saying "nah, fuck that," and eventually closed it out with "Encore."

Mary J and Jigga then came out one more time to do "Heart of the City" off The Blueprint, and closed with that new Swizz Beatz-produced song of theirs

All in all, it was a crazy experience, 20,000 strong going crazy for the two legends, and both artists had amazing sets...both performed with an equally dope, and very extensive live band that made the songs seem that much better...if any of you get the chance, I'd recommend you try and hit up this tour....has anyone gone already?

he did indeed play PSA, and I haven't heard that Nas/Jay-Z mix, although I've been recommonded to hear the mix of God's Son with new beats that use the samples from American Gangster

I woulda had way more respect for Jay and would pro'ly think dude would still be ill like the old days, but his commercial appeal his just too much. Being on a song with Rhianna?? Major L. And yes, I understand she's under his label.

Well I wasn't speaking about only albums per se when I mentioned AG, I was speaking on features also. Jay gets a lot more features than does Nas... especially pop/R&B stuff. That's what I meant by Jay. And the fact that I think Nas is better than Jay comes from a crossover standpoint. Nas can still go back and do his thing on his own music and make it sound fresh and dope. Jay can too... but he lacks in comparison to Nas, at least IMO.

and when you look at it at the end of the day, Nas only really had 1 bad album... and quite frankly, it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be.

I think Jay still has it, I'm a fan no doubt, I just think his business ventures and commercial appeal will never let Jay Z be 'Jay Z' again.
