I got there like an hour after doors and some indie hip-hop trio (Tanya Morgan) was preforming....they were already in the middle of their set, but I caught their last couple joints. There energy was on point, and their stage presence was pretty good too, they were trying their best to get the crowd into it, but the reaction was moderate. Their actual songs, lyrical skill, mic skills werent anything worth getting excited over.
They wrapped up their set fairly quickly at least from what I caught, and they were followed by two DJ's. First dude had a nice collection of shit, he played everything from KRS to Jay to Kanye to Kweli, obviously attracting the Okay-Player crowd with his choices of song. Next dude pretty much just spun some Roots shit to try and hype up the crowd. After every song the crowd thought they saw someone pop up, but it turned out just to be some manager, lol, but the Roots eventually got on at around 10. Needless to say they killed it. I believe they started out with "Long Time," and from the get, the band was killin' it. The had live drums, keys, synths, guitar, tuba, etc. Most of the records they played were from Game Theory, but they sprinkled in some stuff from the new album, as well as stuff from Illadelph Halflife and Things Fall Apart (including a 8-10-minute version of "You Got Me"). In the middle of the show, they have this thing where they do covers of other artist's popular songs, and that was pretty entertaining. The band was jamming to everything from "Roc Boys" to "Sexy Back" to "Throw Some D's" (I was hopin they'd do Soulja Boy), making several whack songs seem great, lol. They let the members have their own solo's as well....Kirk had some guitar solos and duets and sang some Bob Dylan, and of course ?uestlove had some great drum solo's as well. Black Thought's mic skills are damn impressive, he had the crowd with him the whole time, and was spitting his raps with ease and authority. They ended the show with "Don't Feel Right," and then the encore with "The Seed (2.0)." They played for about 2h 20min. All in all the show was very entertaining, and The Roots definetly deserve all the credit they get for their live shows. Side notes: security tried to stop the stoners and failed, the roots brought out a Canadian flag with a marijiuana leaf in the middle, and my digi cam flopped on me, so I was left to take crappy photos with my cell phone even though I got reasonably close up. Hopefully I can get some better pics 'cause I found out one of my other friends was at the show and got some decent ones ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Roots playing Hip-Hop Is Dead ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqJxwrszj3s&feature=related You Got Me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xtg11ddcr1o
