Alright, I decided to review a movie I saw yesterday and if you dont wanna read it, dont post "why review a movie in the ug?", "fuck is this?", etc.

So I never saw the movie the Passion due to how it was supposed to be historically acurate yet had a white man playing jesus...(don't start this argument again). I decided to see this movie because it was about my heritage and one of the most advanced civilizations in human history, the Mayans. The Mayans were superb mathematicians and astronomers who devised one of the most accurate calendars known to man, far more accurate than the modern Gregorian calendar.
The Mayan Calendar was devised through extremely accurate observations of the sun, the planets, the stars and the Milky Way galaxy. Mayan astronomers knew, through yet unknown methods, the exact location of the center of the Milky Way and attached great meaning to the birth and death of stars at this center. Their pyramids were perfectly aligned to the sun and the one at Chichenitza was constructed in such a way that during the equinoxes, the setting sun casts a shadow of a serpent (Kukulcan for the Mayas and Quetzalcoatl for the Aztecs).


So basically the movie is about a hunter named Jaguar Paw who lives in the jungles of Mexico (I'm guessing somewhere near the Yucatan Peninsula). His village is mainly comprised of men, women, and children who forage the jungle and survive off eating tapir and other animals. His village is eventually attacked by a group of Mayans from a nearby city and the villagers are either slaughtered or taken as slaves. The Mayans are then taken to the city where the women are sold off as slaves and the men are bought as sacrificial lambs for their god, Kukulcan. The best part of the movie is the vicious depicture of human sacrifice. It is truly magnificent to see a man use an obsidian knife to quickly cut out a human heart in which some sociologist believe could be done in under 10 seconds. Then to see the look on the Mayans face as he stares at his own heart being lifted up as a sacrifice was, in my opinion, worth the price of admission. The Mayans then proceed to chop off the head of the sacrifice and roll the head down the pyramid (which definitely is one of the best comedic scenes in the entire movie.) Eventually Jaguar Paw escapes from the Mayans and goes back to his jungle where he proceeds to kill his Mayan captors one by one.

I liked the storyline of the movie but it definitely lacked some things. First off. the ending was too obvious and I thought should have ended differently. Although it does leave you wondering if Mel's ending was saying that Christianity saved these savages or did this magnificent civilization end because of greedy Europeans? The jaguar scene seemed way too fake at times and could have been done much better. Although seeing a mayan get bit in the face by a jaguar was truly gratifying after seeing what he did to Jaguar Paw's village. The giving birth underwater scene was also way too fucking wierd for my taste.


Overall I think Mel did an Ok job depicting this civilization. I give the movie a B - overall. The acting was pretty good and I liked how the entire movie was in the Mayan language and actually played by indigenious Mayans, not some bullshit like having Antonio Banderas play a mexican. I would suggest seeing this movie for anyone interested in old civilizations. This movie interested me because it depicts some of my ancestry (although I have no idea if I am Aztec, Mayan, Olmeca descendant due to the faggot Spaniards who burned most records so I can't trace my family history back)

well that was a nice little review sir, not something that i myself would go see probably but id like to learn more about ur peoples so when it comes to DVD i may rent it :)

i don't think the movie was about representing the culture and the end of the Mayan civilization it was more about fate and in my opinion i think the movie was great...you couldn't take your eyes off because you never know what gonna happen next

btw any one watched pursuit of happyness..?

^^ i wanted to but i didnt have money at the time. I agree with you about not being able to take ur eyes off but I felt some of it was predictable. Maybe im overanalyzing it. I'd consider it a comedy personally. It had hilarious scenes like the beheadings, cutting a heart out, the dumbass who went headfirst off a waterfall and cracked his head open, the tapir ball scene, the rubbing plant leaves on ur nuts to help with erectile disfunction, and the owned scene when the mayan leader stabbed the other dude for suggesting they walk down the waterfall and not jump off.

i understand your point that the end is pretty obvious but the way they achieve
this end is what i liked...and coming to think about it this movie had some of the
most funniest scenes I've seen in a long time

i was goin to watch this movie but ended up watching The Good Shepherd instead w/ Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie, which was a pretty good movie that lasted way too long.

Pursuit of Happyness was indeed a dope movie. Obvious ending, like stated, but the parts leading up to it were nothing less than captivating and intriguing.

i jus recently saw a night at the musuem..and it was actually dope. Y'all should go see this. And has anyone seen previews for the new horror(based on a true story) about the motherfukker who is still at large? Shit looks dope.

But that was a lil offtopic...anyways, about ur review, this movie sounds pretty good...i might hafta check it out.
