Actually, Christmas came from the Dutch 'Sinterklaas' and the latter character was based on a bishop of Myra who gave gifts on the eve of his feast day of December 6. Christian Americans just pushed the holiday back, so they could associate it with the new year and therefore with the birth of Christ.

But I'm cool with it, though, because the Dutch celebrate both, so that's more gifts and days off for me.

There is a theory that the date on which Christmas is celebrated is related to Saturnalia, but not that Christmas itself was directly related to this Roman festival.
