Quite a veteran for a dude dropping his first polished LP, Consequence's first GOOD Music-backed project is subject to the double-edge sword that is his highly respected imprint- although Quence has the immediate attention of many Kanye West fans (not to mention the 'Ye beats that come along with the GOOD badge), his label debut, Don't Quit Your Day Job, doesn't quite measure up to the high level of music previously put out by label-mates West, Common, and John Legend. With the Kanye-signed approval comes a sense of expectation, and coming off a couple of attention-worthy verses on Kanye's two LP's, Cons-to-the-Quence delivers a solid effort, but one which leaves much room for tweaking.

The clearest problem on Quence's sophomore disc is the predictable vibes and songwriting put through by Cons on just about every song- with Kanye being well-known for his inventive takes on old-school samples, many cuts here come off as rehashed versions of some of 'Ye's more mediocre work. But this isn't about Kanye- Consequence has proven himself to be a impressive lyricist with an effortless flow through his work on the mixtape circuit, and while the flow and lyrics on Don't Quit Your Day Job are by no means wack, you can't help but feel as though this was the time for Quence to shine, instead of playing it safe to settle for a GOOD disc (pun intended). Fun joints like "Da Job Song" and the West collaborated "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly" are examples of why Quence's main premise for the album works, as his easy-to-relate-to verses (about balancing his 9 to 5 employment with his rap dreams) come across effectively on production which uses a calming, up-tempo vibe (backed by flutes, low-key piano solos, and light soul backup vocals).

"Feel This Way" with John Legend is another example of Cons' more natural blue-collar rhymes, which give unique, comical insight into his life experiences, and "Uncle Rahiem" seems lyrically like Cons' version on the much liked "Family Business". Contrasting the better cuts, are uninspired efforts on the corny "Pretty Little Sexy Mama" and the surprisingly boring GOOD-collabo "Disperse," where guest verses from Really Doe and GLC do little to compliment the smooth production. At 12 full tracks, Cons has himself a well-focused album, with very few throw-away cuts, and songs which are sure to grow with the audience, but for a dude many touted as one of the "next emcees to watch," you can't help but feel that this glass is half-empty.

I almost checked this out today but decided to pass. ATI tends to overrate things compared to my scale and if even he only gave it a 3 I shudder to think what I would give it.
