![]() Damian Marley Welcome To Jamrock Tuff Gong/Universal Welcome To Jamrock- a fitting title for an eclectic experience of high-quality reggae music from the talented Damian Marley. The vivid imagery displayed through the traditional, yet creative sounds paints a picture of the artist's homeland that has yet to be equaled in commercial music. Working around the hugely-popular title track, which represents one of the album's best tracks (using native drums to accent the foreign-sampled chorus), Marley showcases a versatile vocal range combined with some crafty lyricism to produce a varied set of songs, including the lighthearted love ballad "Beautiful" and the somber "Pimpa's Paradise," on which guest emcee Black Thought makes an expected killing on his well-used 16, "Coked up, alone, she ain't even in tune/It's sad cause she ain't really have a reason to use." "For The Babies" and "Hey Girl" are the more generic-type songs that prevent Welcome To Jamrock from fully breaking away from the usual box that encompasses one too many reggae artists. Leave it to the always-on-point Nasir Jones to bring back the focus on the standout "Road To Zion," where Marley's spiritual narrative perfectly compliments the brilliance of Nas, "So save me your sorrys, I'm raisin an army, revolutionary warfare with Damian Marley/We sparking an iron, marching to Zion, you know how Nas be, NYC state of mind I'm in." The production, handled primarily by the two Marley brothers, reaches some great highs, but the inconsistency in quality dampers an otherwise memorable experience from another Marley great. Maybe talent really is hereditary. Hell Razah Renaissance Child Nature Sounds For the Wu-affiliate Hell Razah, you would think it would be common knowledge to him that to craft a successful solo LP, many artistic skills need to be perfected before even hitting the booth to start recording. At many points on his latest solo set, Razah displays venomous lyrics using a menacing flow, but this isn't the mixtape game, and more than lyrics are needed in the big leagues...in other words, bitching about the majors screwing you over on your solo LP just doesn't seem like a good use of time. Not to say that Razah brings little to the table- the Nature Sounds recording artist shows off some impressive song writing ability on the politically-infused "Smoking Gunzz" and "Millennium Warface," and brings along an impressive string of guests to help his efforts. R.A. The Rugged Man proves the most effective, blazing through "The Renaissance" with effortless lines like "Naughty, Jazz Jeff, Slick Rick, I'm Doug Fresh, I'm Def, I'm Canibus before he met Wyclef/Original, I don't bite, I don't need anybody to ghostwrite". The conscious rhymes are at their peak when Razah provides insight into political issues, which include the Israeli crisis and the overall religious tension in the world. But what proves most disappointing about the LP is the lack of focus and purpose on what appears to be a revolutionary-type album- "Yours Truly" proves yet again that rappers should stay away from radio-friendly attempts when they're truly underground to the core, and the style in production is baffling, not out of a lack of quality, but for the total lack of unison it carries. Even lyrically, the overall solid rhymes do tend to come off as repetitive by the album's end, and you can't help but think that you've heard these messages before. This album needed a better executive producer, point blank, because with weak editing and mixing, the bright spots of The Renaissance are largely overshadowed by the confusion that surrounds it.
