Block McCloud - Spittin Image (2006)
Brooklyn MC Block McCloud dropped his long awaited solo debut album Spittin Image in the summer of 2006, and I, like i am sure many other people, completley missed this album. Having been made aware of the skills of McCloud through his Brooklyn Academy history and various dope guest apperances over the years i knew what to expect from this album and it did not disappoint at all. Block delivers vicious verse after verse and is backed up by all his Brooklyn Academy family as well as legendary Wu-affiliate Killah Priest through the course of the album and not one of them puts a foot wrong. The dope verses are complimented perfectly by some of the dopest hooks of the year, sometimes being actually sung by Block himself, and dont worry, he can sing better than most R'n'B artists. Don't let the singing confuse you though, Block is certainly no sell out as he proves witha very solid debut album that is laced with dope lyrics, guest spots and beats. It's not just a hip-hop album, its a musical experiance as some of the instrumentation on here is fantastic and some sounds you wouldnt expect to hear on a hip-hop album at all. Block is a hardcore yet concious rap artists and addresses the state of affairs in the American political scence on a number of tracks. The only complaint I can possibly have is the fact that the album is a bit skit heavy which can disrupt the flow at times and the fact that Block decides to spit in Spanish on one track, but then again, who am i to question what one does because of their heritage. Overall a very dope album indeed, with plenty of replay value throughout, possibly up there with the best drops of 2006, cant believe I missed it first time around.
