EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The relative calm surrounding the Giants’ defense of their Super Bowl title was disrupted Wednesday morning when they announced the two-week suspension of Plaxico Burress, their star wide receiver.
Plaxico Burress was suspended for missing a team practice on Monday and not returning phone calls to explain his absence on Monday and Tuesday. Because the Giants have a bye week with no game this weekend, Burress will miss one game, on Oct. 5 against Seattle at Giants Stadium. “Burress has been suspended for one game for violating team rules,” the statement said. According to FoxSports.com, which first reported the suspension, Burress was suspended for missing a team practice on Monday and not returning phone calls to explain his absence on Monday and Tuesday. The Giants have started their season with three straight victories and Burress has caught 18 passes for 259 yards and one touchdown. Last season, he caught 70 passes for 1,025 yards and 12 touchdowns, and he caught the game-winning pass in the Super Bowl, a 17-14 victory over New England. On the day of the season opener against Washington on Sept. 4, Burress signed a $35 million contract that was to pay him $11 million this season. Jerry Reese, the general manager of the Giants, said Wednesday morning that Burress had met with Reese and Coach Tom Coughlin earlier in the day. When asked if Burress was physically O.K., Reese said, “He’s fine.” But Reese refused to answer questions about the specifics of Burress’s absence or the amount of salary he would lose during the suspension. “It is what it is,” Reese said. “I don’t have anything to say about it.” Carl Francis, director of communications for the National Football League Players Association, said Burress had the right to appeal a suspension but that no appeal had been filed as of Wednesday morning. Drew Rosenhaus, the agent for Burress, did not return a telephone call to comment. Burress is in his ninth season in the N.F.L. and his fourth with the Giants. At 6-foot-5 and 232 pounds, he is taller than most receivers and uses his height to an advantage over shorter defensive backs. In Sunday’s 26-23 overtime victory over Cincinnati, Burress caught three passess for 45 yards. He was drafted on the first round by Pittsburgh in 200 and signed by the Giants as a free agent in 2005. He played in college at Michigan State and grew up in Virginia Beach, Va. Other Giants who play the position and can fill in for Burress include Steve Smith, Domenik Hixon, Amani Toomer and Sinorice Moss. Toomer is second on the team in receptions with 13. Smith has 11 and Hixon six. Burress has one. |
