Eminem Doesn't Want The Fame Of His Peak, Says Hip-Hop Today Is 'Crap'
Published: Tuesday - October 21, 2008 Words by Allen Starbury Although he was arguably one of the biggest rappers ever during his peak, Eminem isn't stressing about being that popular again. In fact, he doesn't want it. In a recent interview with the BBC's Zane Lowe, the 36-year-old rapper revealed that he has "no desire" to achieve the monumental commercial success of his past. "There's no desire to be that big again. Whatever happens, I'll take it, but that's definitely not what I'll be recording the songs for," Em said. Em adds that he only wanted to record again "to remind people how I rap." Just because he isn't looking to attain his past glory, that doesn't mean he isn't proud of his accomplishments. In fact, he very much is. "[I feel] pretty good about what I've done," he said. "I've accomplished enough with the music that I haven't had to go out there and do other things to over-saturate. ... That's probably what I take pride in most." But, Em knows with massive success comes fame, and he's not looking for that these days. He likes his privacy. "It's kind of catch 22. I love the attention, but I don't like too much of it," he said. It's been a few years since we last heard the great white rapper. During that time, he's been listening to what hip-hop has become, and he's not happy about it. The rapper says that a lot of the hip-hop he hears today is garbage. Of course, with a few exceptions. "I don't mean everything about rap is crap. I just mean the majority of it," he said. "Actually I think T.I.'s new album is great and I've been pumping that for the last two weeks every day in my car aside from my own stuff as I record it. "Andre 3000 is also incredible. So I just mean rap in general." As previously reported, Eminem is back in the studio with Dr. Dre almost exclusively. For the past five months, he and Dre have been holed up in the studio: Eminem doing the writing and Dre producing. Em likes that the beat making process is taken off his shoulder. This way, he only has to be the emcee. "All those things are taken care of for me," he said. "I feel like a spoilt rapper. I get to pick and choose everything." He doesn't want the fame, but he wants his music out there. Em also revealed that he's isn't ready to tour just yet either. However, he said there's a possibility he will, just not right now.
