Like many hip-hop artists, the newest member of Shady Records considers music an outlet to tell the story of his struggle. "I had a f---ed up, sh--ty ass hard life like everybody else, but I'm just in a position to voice my life," Cashis told BallerStatus.com.

Maybe Cashis' past is a typical inner-city story, and maybe it isn't, but check the facts: No male in Cashis' family has lived past age 23, he's been incarcerated several times, his father was absent throughout his life and the mother of his first child was killed when their baby was nine months old. He now has 10 children to support and said he does so, along with supporting the mothers of his children.

"That's hard enough, and I have to maintain and be a young man at the same time and be an artist," he said.

When it comes to art, apparently Shady and company saw something special in the Orange Country, Calif. resident, who was hand-picked from West Coast favorites The Renegadez and signed after sending a mixtape to Shady Records.

Cashis said he is "ecstatic" about being part of one of hip-hop's most formidable labels after spending several years as an underground artist. "I feel great, I feel like I'm in the best position ever," he said. "I'm surrounded by the most talented in the rap industry, so I know I can only get better."

He plans to release an EP in January of 2007 called County Hound, partly a reference to his many trips to the country jail, and a full-length album next summer tentatively titled A Talk With Cashis.

He is featured on six songs on The Re-Up, a compilation album that includes fellow Shady Records newcomers Bobby Creekwater and Stat Quo, as well as recognizables like 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Obie Trice, Akon, Nate Dogg, Eminem and members of the D12 crew. Production comes from the likes of Eminem, Dr. Dre and Alchemist, who also compiled the album "in true mixtape fashion," among others.

"We were all in the same room and we was ready to do it, and we put it together and it came out tight as hell, so we decided to put it out as a mixtape album," said Cashis. "Everybody was just vibing off each other and we was just telling each other stories and giving each other input on the records, and it came out real, real good."

Cashis may be the first West Coast rapper signed to Shady Records, but he said it's not all about geography, especially considering he spent the first 13 years of his life in the south side of Chicago. "I understand how sh-- go out here in California, so I can bring that, but what I'm really bringing to the table is me," he said. "I'm bringing Cashis, I'm bringing a real n----, I'm bringing someone who ain't scared of nobody."

Although his name comes from his reputation as a fighter who would predict when and where he would strike hardest, like famed boxer Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Clay, his motto comes from another black hero—Malcolm X. "That's what I feel like I'm bringing, 'by any means necessary,'" Cashis said. Apparently now, the "means" is hip-hop.

"I'm in a position to make myself better, so that's what my music is, it's just reflection," he said. "It's telling you everything I went through and then letting you know I'm still making these same mistakes. I'm just taking the listener on a walk through my life as I get it right, if I get it right. Who knows? You know, hopefully I get it right."
