Group Home - Livin Proof

Lookin back at 1995 - many consider this to be right in the middle of DJ Premier's prime, and in this year he prodcued the debut album from Group Home - Livin Proof. Group Home consists of Lil' Dap and Melachi the Nutcracker, 2 East Coast MCs that had previously dropped in for guest spots on Daily Operation and Hard To Earn and were part of the GangStarr Foundation so they were droppin their debut album with a lot of pressure on their young shoulders.

Right from the outset on the album you can tell that Premier is going to be doing a fantastic job on the boards throughout the course of the album with trademark New York scratch samples appearing as early as 1 second into the first track on the album Inna Citi Life. What comes next though is more likely to upset than thrill hip-hop fans. The albums first verse is dropped by Lil Dap who comes across uninterested and uninspired and we are only on the first track. Lil Dap will continue like this throughout the record. Melachi the Nutcracker on the other hand is an energetic MC and you will find yourself nodding your head in approval through his verse on the first track. By the time you hear the second track though you will begin to get a sense of Deja Vu as you hear Melachi spittin very similar lines to ones he has spit on the previous track, not a good sign on an album when you are as close to the start as track 2 and you are already hearing recycled rhymes.

Overall this is a album packed with top drawer production but let down by one MC that doesnt seem to know what he is doing and another that just needs to find more to rap about. You will find yourself coming back time and time again to listen to the album, but believe me, it wont be for the rhymes, it'll be for some of the best Preemo beats there has ever been. In my opinion the production is the only thing that saves this album from the 2 below par MCs and half the time you will find yourself not even paying attention to them as the fabulous production drowns them out. Maybe you would be better of searching for an instrumental copy of the album.
