Eminem Eminem Presents: The Re-Up Shady/Aftermath/Interscope **1/2 Its fairly obvious to most hip-hop fans that the last few years have been a disaster for Eminem. Marshall Mathers has had to deal with the death of his right-hand man Proof and a publicized split with ex-wife Kim, not to mention a bout with drugs and a the release of his critically disappointing album Encore. But in true Eminem fashion, Mathers returns to the rap game, and brings along the Aftermath family for this fourth-quarter compilation. The Re-Up kicks off with the high-energy "We're Back" but Em is unfortunately upstaged by his more hungry guests, primarily Obie Trice, who leaves Em, Stat Quo, Bobby Creekwater and newcomer Cashis in the dust with his stand out verse. Obie sounds sharp again on the remix of "Pistol Pistol," but Eminem is yet again overshadowed on the album's title track by a seemingly rejuvenated 50 Cent, where Em's overly hard flow comes off as boring. The first single "You Don't Know" is a typical one for the Interscope crew, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but both the production and rhymes end up sounding redundant. "Jimmy Crack Corn" features a horribly corny Eminem alongside 50 Cent, who does an interesting job switching his flow to the beat of this otherwise forgettable track. Questionable Eminem signees Cashis, Stat Quo, and Bobby Creekwater fail to impress on The Re-Up as their respective solo joints go down as nothing more than filler. While the production on The Rep-Up sounds much too similar from track to track, the piano loops on "We Ride For Shady" and "Get Low" provide nice backings for Obie, Cashis, and Stat Quo. The remix to The Massacre’s "Ski Mask Way" begs for an inspired Eminem verse, although 50 does an adequate job keeping it interesting, unlike the remixes to "Shake That" and "Smack That". The album's closer is also its finest cut, as Eminem finally gets personal on "No Apologies," as he details his reasoning behind the harsh attitude that is Eminem, while soulful violins play out the album. The Re-Up does not come off as a total disappointment, but more of a over-publicized mixtape full of unnecessary remixes and guest artists. The production is average for an Aftermath release, but the main problem comes in the lack of creativity in the rhymes. Let's hope Em only invites 50 and Obie along for the next ride.
