ATI's Review: The Game-Doctor's Advocate

The Game
Doctor's Advocate
Black Wall Street/Geffen/Interscope
**1/2

Before even the release of Doctor's Advocate, The Game seemed to place himself in an vulnerable position while building anticipation for his sophomore album. One too many times, Game turned the focus away from his upcoming set, instead choosing to involve himself in mindless publicity stunts, from projecting his album sales to throwing subliminals at Jay-Z. Unfortunately, the swagger of The Game could not save the inevitable realization that the Doctor's Advocate was truly a generic piece of work, from a young rapper with the potential to do great things.

Without even listening to the opening track, it was apparent that the Doctor's Advocate ironically lacks the presence of Dr. Dre, a loss that makes a world of difference on The Game's follow-up to the Documentary. The first half of the album is enough to warrant the stopping of this CD, as Game simply goes through the motions, clearly lacking the hunger apparent on his strong debut. While the albums first two singles "Its Okay" and "Let's Ride" rely on infectious production, The Game does not get bailed out on several other tracks. The album's star producers, Scott Storch, Just Blaze, and even Kanye West come up surprisingly short, leaving Game's lyrically bland rhymes out to dry. The album's back half is far stronger, with emotional efforts coming in the form of "One Night", "Around The World", and the album's highlight "Why You Hate The Game" featuring a rejuvenated Nasir Jones and the always soulful Marsha of Floetry. Despite, the few highs, even the second-half of Doctor's Advocate is cluttered with filler and name heavy raps.

After the success of The Documentary, we were inclined to expect a similarly strong outing on the Doctor's Advocate, but the 26-year old from Compton produces none of the spark that made him a household name in the first place. While The Game has spent a large part of his career feuding with his East coast foe 50 Cent, it has never been clearer that it is unlikely that the two will ever reach the heights they were at while standing on the same stage.

album sounded very west coast like..it will never get the respect it deserves because its not commericalized as the documentary was. but yea in his 3rd album he will need something new to talk about.
