Well, it’s been a minute since the last Dubplate Drama. You remember? The show you and your friends were addicted to a while back [2005] which got the nation texting, voting online and talking about the most innovative series to hit our screens since The Simpsons. Well, the urban music drama series is back and bigger than ever.
The 15 minute episodes have been transformed into 30 minutes of pure drama with a strong comedic strand woven throughout. The cast has also expanded with the main character, Dionne [played by Shystie], being joined by Adam Deacon, Hoodman, Roger Griffiths, N-Dubz, Tim Westwood, Ricci Harnett, Mike GLC, Hypa Fenn & Marciephonix, Duane Henry, Big Narstie, Daniel Parmar, Noel Clarke, Dynamite MC, Nolay, Newham Generals, TJ Jembere, Sean Brosnan, DJ Cameo, Jammer, Ras Kwame, DJ Zinc, Ghetto, SAS, Boya, Lightning, Craze 24, Bigz, Key Skillz, Plastician, Penny Smith, David Icke and of course narrator Rodney P. Again following Dionne through the streets of London’s underground the first episode kicks off very strong. You can tell from the outset that the budget, production, acting and comedy levels have been upped. The opening minutes see Warren [Dionne’s younger cousin – played by Hoodman] up to his old tricks again and a unauthorised house party is in full swing. A vibrant MC is on the mic (Ghetto) and a confident DJ (Cameo) is on the decks surrounded by girls. The house is rammed and we soon find out it’s actually Dionne’s Nan’s house which is being trashed. Dionne soon switches and… that’s where we’ll leave it for now. Make sure you catch the first episode on Channel 4 on Thursday 20 September. At the party we spoke to a few of the series’ stars, Kidulthood and Sugarhouse’s Adam Deacon tells RWD of his character, “I play Bones,” and continues with, “he’s an up-and-coming MC and that was crazy. He’s at that stage where he’s built up his underground hype and something is about to happen. He’s probably at that stage that N-Dubz have just left. It’s that time where you’ve got to make the right decisions and you’ve got to have the right people around you.” At that point RWD speak to Faze from N-Dubz he lets loose, “Yeah, I play a guy called Flames and I own a radio station on the series. Basically, I say what goes. If your record ain’t cutting it, it’s not getting on my station.” Now surrounded by Tulisa and Dappy, he tells us how his debut acting gig went, “It was a good experience, I read the script and just did me, really.” So will he be off to Hollywood anytime soon? He leaves the dictaphone with a sturdy and prevailing statement, “Na man, I’m off to the studio next.” http://rwdmag.com
