White Stripes, Rihanna Hold Down U.K. Charts

The White Stripes entered the U.K. album chart at No. 1 yesterday (June 24) with "Icky Thump" (XL Recordings), as "Umbrella" (Def Jam) by Rihanna featuring Jay-Z started a sixth week atop the singles chart.

The Stripes' album thus outdid the performance of their last set, 2005's "Get Behind Me Satan," which peaked at No. 3, and returned them to the level of 2003's "Elephant," which also debuted on the British chart at No. 1. The first single and title track of the new set stands at No. 6 on the new survey, having peaked at No. 2 last week.

Last week's bestselling album, the Traveling Wilburys' "Collection" (Rhino/Warner Bros.), fell to No. 2. Enrique Iglesias, No. 3 for the second week with the single "Do You Know? (The Ping Pong Song)" (Interscope), added a No. 3 album with the arrival of "Insomniac." Scottish DJ Calvin Harris, whose single "The Girls" (Columbia) reached No. 3 two weeks ago and now bounces back 6-4, scored a No. 8 entry with the album "I Created Disco."

Take That's multi-platinum "Never Forget -- The Ultimate Collection" (RCA) returned to the chart at No. 9, and there was a No. 18 entry for London band Ghosts with their debut set, "The World Is Outside" (Atlantic).

Rihanna's continuing reign withstood the challenge of TV star Lee Mead, the winner of BBC1's recent search for a lead in the upcoming production of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat." His version of "Any Dream Will Do" (Polydor) climbed 18-2.

Birmingham modern rock outfit Editors soared 30-7 with "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors" (Columbia), from their second album "An End Has a Start," which is released today. There was a 23-12 climb for the Chemical Brothers' "Do It Again" (Virgin) and Anglo-Swedish rock trio the Hoosiers scored a debut hit as download sales of "Worried About Ray" (RCA) took it to No. 16.

Take That scored another hit from their "Beautiful World" album (Polydor) as "I'd Wait For Life" entered at No. 17, and there was a fifth hit from Muse's "Black Holes and Revelations" (Helium 3/Warner Bros.) as "Map of the Problematique" started at No. 18.

Bon Jovi's "Lost Highway" (Universal Island) became their fourth album of this decade to hit No. 1 on Billboard's European Top 100 Albums chart, following "Have A Nice Day" in 2005, "Bounce" in 2002 and "Crush" in 2000. The Rihanna single is in its third week at No. 1 on Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
