That's right.

I can't lie. I thought Rick Ross was finished when the Miami rapper was under siege by 50 Cent, the mastermind of destroying careers. Also, when he first came out, I wasn't all that impressed with him as an artist. But, it would seem that, misfortune has made fate smile upon Rick. (For the record, Ross has proclaimed absolute victory. Click here to see the video of this declaration.)

50 Cent was lighting up Ross' life that first week to two weeks of their beef. It was ugly and disrespectful. Sure, Ross started it wit a scant rap line. It was like a kid going up and hitting a beehive and that's exactly how I looked at Ross when he mentioned 50's baby's mother in "Mafia Music." Why would he do such a thing as incite the fury of 50 Cent?

The answer remains a mystery.

Oh, but this is for sure, Ross is in a prime position at this point in 2009.

Be clear, Ross isn't any sort of loser. He experienced his breakout after signing with Def Jam. With Trilla (2008), he topped his first album, Port of Miami (2006)- in my opinion. Two gold-selling albums. Everything was cool, but suddenly thesmokinggun.com confirmed the rumors that Rick Ross had once served as a correctional officer in Miami.

Hip-Hop and the streets gasped collectively! How would he plow though the blasphemy and so-called shame of having such a past (a 9-5 for God's sake!)? How else - thug his way though-as Jay-Z put it. An alleged beatdown of DJ Vlad produced a $4 million lawsuit against the rapper for asking about the occupation. That wasn't a good idea on Ross' crew's part. He continued to tell lil' lies or ignore the rumors. He was in a spider's web, but refused to squirm.

And then there was 50 Cent, who just this year did everything but show Ross in a tutu Jay-Z style. For all intent and purposes, Rick Ross should have had one foot in the rap grave and the other on slippery ice.

Through it all, Ross is still here.

He's here for the same reason Lil' Wayne remains a staple in rap. Remember when those images of Lil Wayne and "daddy " Baby popped up? The uproar! The furor! The name calling! The fans split like the Red Sea! They hated Wayne. They loved Wayne. They thought he was gay. They thought he was straight. Wayne forged ahead to defeat his circumstances in ways that really defies logic (based on the "rules" of Hip-Hop).

Ross' dilemma is similar to Wayne's, but why he won't lose is slightly different.

Rick Ross isn't likely to topple 50 Cent and he doesn't have to collapse the G-Unit Dynasty. All Ross has done has showed some moxie and continuously produce quality music.

To keep it moving, he's been staying on message by calling 50 Cent a "monkey" in a manner than is highly offensive to me. Of course, 50 Cent and G-Unit refer to themselves as gorillas so who am I to question the reduction of status? And Ross now does a lot of laughing and posturing though his own viral videos. As he’s withstood the torrential storm, he’s increased his aggressiveness. It reminds of how Muhammad Ali withstood George Foreman's mighty body shots as he did the rope-a-dope.

50 And Ross have similarities.

In the not-too-distant past, 50 Cent was the underdog and he was regarded as some form of “snitch” for his penchant for writing rhymes with the names of street dudes in them. That’s what they said was considered dry snitching. I wasn’t even aware of this “dry snitching” until 50’s detractors came along. Still, 50 Cent won everybody over (the fans, the streets, corporate America) with his ability to create good, f**kin’ music. He’s a huge success by just about any standard. When the music is right, all the naysayers are forced to fall in line.

Here we are and Ross’ Deeper Than Rap is here. The fans were upset when Ross was not completely honest about his tenure as a C.O., but they really only cared hat he didn’t tell the truth. Fans of music typically willingly believe in the false image that most rappers portray. When they find the facts, they act oh-so-shocked and amazed that Rapper X didn't kill 30 people, only did 3 months in jail and flipped burgers and Mickey D's once or twice. All rappers are phoney to some extent as are most celebrities in general.

Whatever Ross did in his former life really doesn't matter to me.

The music he has been pumping out is dope and his new album sound like his best work to date. There isn't a more eloquent way to describe the music. It’s DOPE. Quality music is truly what the people want in 2009, especially at a time when the industry seems to be struggling to define itself.

So, there you have it, an editorial that could have easily been titled “Why Rick Ross Will Win.”

Epilogue: Right now, 50 Cent and his G-Unit crew continue to berate Rick Ross, but have been very quiet as of late. Rick Ross' baby's mother and 50 are supposed to drop a revelatory book about Ross. My insider intelligence also suggests that there are far more nefarious maneuvers being plotted, but that’s another rumor for another day.

But you got a point. People just don't care. But now I realize that Hip Hop is dead and fake. People only see Hip Hop as music but it's more then that. It's a lifestyle.
I mean in corporate life if Ross would lie about something he would be forced to step back. They give him a pass in Hip Hop.

Same with T.I. The nigga snitched and is still considered as a G and real nigga.
Although Wayne isn't a gangsta rapper he also shouldn't get a pass for that kissing Baby like that. If he did that shit in Iran he would be tortured and executed. But people only care about his music and rappers need him to sing their hooks so everybody is faking like they like each other.

Anyway Ross lost and he took a lot of L's.
Firts of all about the babymomma thing. He said he would pay the bills of Shaniqua Tompkins. But then it's funny to me that Brooke is doing porno movies to provide for his child and he takes the car from his other babymomma Tia. 50 spend more money on Tia then Ross ever did. Thats L nr 1.

If he didn't started beefing with 50 he would never confess being a C.O. After 50 released all his documents Ricky felt the pressure and knew he had to come clean. He was trying to bring all kind of excuses. Thats L nr 2 and I say it agian. 50 made him confess.

Lost nr 3. All the negative publicity. You have somebody punking him on the phone. I've seen officer Ricky T-Shirts. People making fun of his songs and you have now even a pornostar writing a rhyme and dissing him in a videoclip.
It's even an embarrasement that Officer Down sold more on iTunes then Magnificent.

About his music. Ross knows how to rap thats all. And a nigga using T-Pain again on his second album just proves he can't deliver hits by his own. He needs help. If 50 would have those names on his album he would do like 2 million the first week. Take all the featurings aways from his album and what do you have? Nothing!!
14 tracks and only 4 he did by himself. You got to be realistic about his music. Talking about he makes good music. Everybody acting like a Dj Khaled by outting all these names on their albums.

Plus he came up with all kind of reasons about how this beef started. The first reason was the way 50 looked at him. Second reason was of the way 50 dress, that 50 is curly, a gay and a monkey. Now it's becuz Khaled's car being shot up and that 50 don't deliver good music. I just don't get this guy.

And a nigga using T-Pain again on his second album just proves he can't deliver hits by his own[/B

Normally I wouldn't even respond to this but you are on of the top 5 dickryders on here and do you remember a song called Ayo Technology with Justin Timberlake that came out about 1 year and a half ago? It was off of Curtis: A 50 Cent album. Nobody is going to sell 1 million the first week for a while. Maybe EM

I thought Port of Miami was a good album. I thought Trilla was a better album. But Deeper Than Rap...it's a shit sandwhich. BISD is going to be the better album and we all know this to be true.

Name one other song with Justin Timberlake that 50 had on a album??? Doesn't excist.
Using T-Pain the second time on a album is lame I don't care how good that track might be.
Plus I'm def sure Justin Timberlake won't be on 50's next album.

The fact is 50 will sell more then Rick Ross without and with featurings.
Curtis sold more then 5 million. You know Deeper Then Rap won't even sell half.

He'll turn himself into a Fat Joe artist.
Fat Joe need featurings to be hot.
Lean Back was his last big hit. After that he needed Wayne with I Make It Rain, J-Holiday on I Won't Tell and now Akon. Name one hit after Lean Back he did by himself.

Ross did Biggest Boss with T-Pain. Now he got T-Pain aigain as if he signed T-Pain. It's easy to say that he's big he's this he's that and all that but he need featurings.

Rowdy Rowdy, Life's on the line line, Wanksta, In da club, U not like me, Many men, If I can't, Disco Inferno, Just A lil bit, I get Money, Hustlers Ambition and Window Shopper. Those are all hits 50 did by himself without having feauturings.

Rick Ross can't even top that. Then how the fuck this nigga be saying he beat 50 musically when 50 got the most hits by his own.

AIght remove all those names form the album do you still get the same result? I don't think so.

thats why I say this album should be called Offcier Ricky & Friends.
Believe me I would react the same if this was an 50 Cent album.

5 or 6 featurings are more then enough but not don't come up with 10 featurings on a 14 track album.

RapReview Of The Week
Rick Ross :: Deeper Than Rap
Maybach Music/Def Jam
Author: Adam M. Levin

There's a lot of things about modern rap music that I don't like: from the simplistically produced rap records that dilute radio rotations every fifteen minutes on every station across the country to the uninteresting (and often drug-induced) "fresh new artists" that keep on spamming the e-mail inboxes of my fellow RapReviews staffers and myself, it's a hassle to even put effort into listening to the records anymore.

The one thing that pisses me off THE MOST about today's rappers, however, is their lack of authenticity—especially when they lay so much claim to how "real" their records are. Most artists—Rick Ross among them—would rather not discuss the lives they've actually led, and instead craft an image for themselves that compiles every gangster movie cliché into the perfect hoodlum—a Teflon don, if you will (sidenote: not surprisingly, Ross's initial rap name was, in fact, Tephlon Da Don).

However, maybe the recent uncovering of Ross's not-so-shady past as a corrections officer has done something to open up his heart to the masses as the first track off of his third effort, "Deeper Than Rap," demonstrates:

"I got a feelin nigga, really that my money be the root
Look up at the stars, she like, "Honey, where the roof?"
Pull up, hear the dogs, canarie, they goin woof
Even once had a job pourin tar up on a roof
Dat boy had it hard, no facade, it's the truth
So now when I manage and get massaged it's the proof"

Titled "Mafia Music," it set off a now long-winded rap war with 50 Cent when it leaked to the internet back in January. Over the deep organs, bouncy guitar riffs, and heavy drums provided by Virginia-based production duo The Inkredibles, Ross addresses everything associated with his "rise to power," for lack of a better term. In fact, if anything, "Deeper Than Rap" is a surprisingly good album that shows the growth in the technical skill of a rapper often decried for his simplistic subject matter. He's entertaining to listen to, as exemplified on "Maybach Music 2," the T-Pain, Lil' Wayne, and Kanye West-assisted sequel to last year's much-talked about collaboration with Jay-Z. He displays a lyrical dexterity that he's rarely displayed on either his debut "Port of Miami" or its follow-up, last year's "Trilla":

"Kush burn like petroleum, crib need custodians
Shades in all shades, these made of rhodium
Used to be the O smoke, hoes call it olo
Now I got so many horses bitches call me polo
5762, tell me how you wanna move
'Ye, you know I got 'em both, beat ya ass black-and-blue
I was barely gettin' pretty women
Now I scoop Emmy winners like kitty litter
Any winter, Fendi denim like a slimmer nigga
Lookin' in the mirror, I can see the real contender
Celery and beef from Gregory, I'm on my dinner
So what the fuck is you tellin' me other than ya gender?
I'm a boss and I'm ridin' like a small boat
Niggas make ya wheels, I'm ridin' till they fall off"

While he's definitely stepped up his rap game, Ross is only really a voice on top of the production, which is some of the finest that I've heard this year. Provided mostly by three squads (the aforementioned The Inkredibles, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, and The Runners) with beats by DJ Toomp, Bigg D (of "Hello Brooklyn 2.0" fame), Drumma Boy, and C. "Tricky" Stewart, the production is a perfect reflection of Ross's lyrical content. It creates a slick aesthetic without sounding overproduced, utilizing cleanly filtered samples to create a backdrop that sounds like the backdrop to Ross's Miami lifestyle: "Maybach Music 2" features smooth saxophones and a frantic string section; the John Legend-assisted single "Magnificent" has airy synths playing over guitars and marimbas; and "Murda Mami" (which includes a guest appearance by Foxy Brown) grabs your attention with an ill guitar riff over crisp drums.

One of the album's shining gems, however, has to be "Usual Suspects," where Nas waxes poetic on his own ascent to the top from his humble beginnings:

"And still my talent is yet to be challenged
Had no jet with my own pilot, no blasting off with Flex or DJ Khaled
My mom stressing college
But my crude sense of logic did allude to my empty wallet
Try spitting on a green tinted Accord
Which could mean a sentence up north where the homie was
But back then dough was like a whore that Goldie love, it didn't exist
And Officer Foley Cuffs was after my wrists
Was not Beverly Hills where we chilled
Imagine this, the Nazareth had to get from rags to rich
I used to stand on rooftops, with 2 glocks
Figuring, how do I turn my Timberlands to Crocs?
Now reptiles was left out, I'm 'bout a watch, what is you thinking?
Murk you, plus the muscle that you bringing is nothing to me
If you thugging or fake and shanked on Cuban, shout out my Ricans
Dealt with all of you gangstas, to the roughest Jamiacans and Haitians"

Again, Ross is simply a voice over the Justice L.E.A.G.U.E.'s ill production, and he gets completely served on his own record by a reinvigorated Esco, who sounds as hungry as he did on "The Message" back in '96.

While a lot of Ross's gangsta rings false in the face of the allegations regarding his personal life, his album certainly doesn't suffer for it. It's essentially a gangster movie on wax, and Ross is excellent in his role as the boss at the top of the heap with nothing to lose but his cool. However, he certainly gets outshined by the original score—but that only serves to make a much better album than many anticipated from the Boss himself.

OK but you're not removing the features from the album. I'm not talking what if. I'm talking what is. To me the features are good and enhance the album.

To you their bad just because.

also the reason y 50 doesnt have a more diverse groups of guests is because people dont wanna work with him. face it he barely ever makes appearences on other people's albums apart from his g-unit roster.

but yh apart from that u are correct, ross knows how to rap but now everything he says will be deemed to be fake.
im pretty sure the aftermath group in general doesnt really fuck wit too many people, eminem isnt exactly featured on everyones song either and im sure plenty of people have asked him
