I knew going into the Game's gig at the Grove of Anaheim on Wednesday night that, though ticket time was 8 p.m., there would be a three-hour wait – at least – before the L.A. firebrand would finally hit the stage.

What arrogance, huh?

Look, I agree: Though he feuds with other rappers so needlessly it reeks of defensive posing and P.R. strategizing, the guy is undeniably among the most crucial hip-hop figures to emerge this decade.

As a symbol for deep-grooved West Coast thuggery – Compton forever his stomping ground, even if he reportedly lives in Glendale now – he's nothing less than a supreme badass. No one else really rivals him as new torchbearer for straight-up, hard-core, cap-bustin' gangsta rap; no one else, not even 2Pac, has retraced the footsteps of N.W.A – and specifically his mentor Dr. Dre – so exactly.

"Diddy ain't put me here," the Game pointed out near the end of his fierce, tight, still kinda skimpy hourlong set. "50 Cent" – a collaborator who exec produced Game's arresting 2005 debut, "The Documentary," yet who has routinely been the target of his macho beefing – "he definitely ain't put me here. Dr. Dre put me here!"

The Game was 21 when he met his idol. "I didn't have no Louis Vuitton belt … no crisp shirt. My shirt was dingy. I still smelled like crack. Dre took me from a (messed)-up position. … And if the (n-word) make us wait another 50 years for 'Detox' … then we wait."

"Detox," you may or may not know, is Dr. Dre's long-overdue third album, following his 1992 ground-breaker "The Chronic" and its less-revered sequel, "Chronic 2001." The Game, in an interview with men's magazine Complex, insisted last summer – not long after he started serving three years probation on a felony weapons conviction – that Dre couldn't possibly finish the album without him on it.

"I am the West Coast," the 29-year-old said in August. "You can't do anything on the West Coast without involving myself, my name, or my brand. For me not to be a part of 'Detox,' Dre would be doing himself an injustice, not me."

He sure seemed a lot less cocky about that Wednesday night.

But that was all later, much later – by which time it had become Thursday.

It was at least a half-hour before then, actually, that the Game upended a full bottle of Grey Goose and gulped down every drop. (Amazingly, it seemed to have no effect on him.) It was also around that time that, while a Chris Brown record played, he vaguely threatened security ("wha'chu wanna start a riot in here for?") when at first they balked at the idea of permitting 25 or so scantily clad hotties and notties clamber onto the stage.

It was at least a half-hour before that stunt, by the way, that a fight broke out over who-knows-what in the fourth tier of partying at the Grove. And that incident wasn't long after one of a half-dozen warm-up acts, Nipsey Hussle, encountered such hostile indifference, he got booed off.

It wasn't that Nipsey was so lame; "Bullets Ain't Got No Name" hits just as hard as any other underground gangland holler, and "They Roll" is a fine Dre retread. But after standing around through so many other brief spotlights of questionable talent from the Game's Black Wall Street roster, can you blame the haters for getting so impatient?

Frankly, I'm surprised they weren't throwing things during the 30 further minutes it took the Game to get on stage once the house lights went out for the last time.

They still had to get through two more guest stars. First: X.O., instantly indicating his superiority by noting in rhyme that he would soon urinate on all the black men in the audience. (Just my translation, mind you.) Next: the very forgettable Clyde Carson, whose repeatedly shouted name this night sounded instead like Clive Coursey, Chi Corset and Clay Orphan.

After that? Twenty minutes of DJ hype and a mix of classic West Coast grooves and current club bangers, plus some Kanye, Snoop, Hova, House of Pain. By then the wait had grown maddening, illogical. Even when the needle dropped on T.I.'s "Bring Em Out" – a cue if I've ever heard one – the Game remained backstage.

"But enough about me," the DJ finally joked. "Los Angeles!" (Dude, you're in O.C. But whatev.) "You came out here for one thing!"

Yes, they had. Quite some time ago.

Was the wait worth it? I suppose so.

"I haven't done a show in Cali in I don't how long," Game noted at the outset. "I been staying in the house. Growing a beard like Rick Ross."

For fans, then – more of whom will pack Club Nokia when he takes forever to get on that stage Friday night – this was undoubtedly a welcome, hearty, raw return, filled with key tracks that spanned from the defining "Westside Story" to relevant recent fare like "State of Emergency," "Big Dreams" and "My Life."

"Turn the lights down," Game demanded at the start of that last song. "We gonna have a U2 moment. … Turn those lights down. I feel like Elton John up here. I don't wanna feel like Elton. I wanna feel like (bleepin') Bruce Springsteen."

Then his shirt came off – revealing abs that are turning to flab. "Sorry ladies, I'm getting fat. I'm rich."

Hmmm. Maybe that's why he thinks he can make people wait nearly 3½ hours for him to show up. Yeah, I know: that's hip-hop, that's how these things go. But I still think it's insulting.
