While Kanye West got into a war of words with 50 Cent over album sales last year, the Chicago rapper isn’t concerned about doing big numbers for his latest effort, 808s & Heartbreak.
While the work, West’s fourth studio effort, is sure to be in the running among top selling albums, creating “great art” trumped commercial success this time around.
"You know people sometimes don't understand great art when they first hear it, but I am very confident in it,” West told the Associated Press. “Whether it sells as much as the last one, or way more, I feel like I am just successful in doing something I felt really good about."
History may be on the side of outside the box album projects from Hip Hop artists. Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse found commercial success via Gnarls Barkley and Andre 3000’s The Love Below helped push OutKast to diamond status on the Billboard charts.

kanye aint need 50 to sell. kanye didnt sell this time around because he did such a drastic change.. if he wouldve done a regular rap album like his past three i would've went and copped it and he probably wouldve done between 600k-800k first week.. and i hated 808s at first but its kinda growing on me but its still too out there for me to buy, and no i dont consider it hip hop i tihnk of it as like pop/r&b

what a lot of you guys dont realize is that when youre someone who makes music you learn to appreciate all type of music and creativity because you know what it involves.. i wonder how many other rappers could try to do a style so different with new sounds/beats and make it sound that decent..

and with all of hip hop being singled out and blamed for a million things since its beginning you wouldnt think so many of us would be so close minded...
