Default 07/14/08 - Concert Review: 50 Cent

07/14/08 - Concert Review: 50 Cent

Perhaps a record label rep buddy of mine summed up all the appeal of Sunday night's 50 Cent/G-Unit show in one simple, swift sentence: "It's all about seven years ago, man."

True that, but Fiddy and his crew offered much more than memorabilia to the sweaty, excited crowd that packed the Shaw Conference Centre that evening.

Fiddy showed up grinning and in one heck of a happy mood, offering some of his best to fans who couldn't have asked for anything more -- fans who were more than happy to be shouting/chanting/jumping along to every single line he and G-Unit teammate Lloyd Banks were spitting at them.

The irony, of course, is that a lot of people in the music biz have been questioning Fiddy's relevance since he went crashing and burning in a record sales showdown with "Dr. Ego" himself -- Kanye West -- and lost the battle between West's Graduation and Fiddy's latest solo, Curtis, in one heck of a landslide.

So it was a tad surreal to have the house DJ cue up West's The Good Life alongside tracks by Number One rapper-of-the-moment Lil Wayne right before G-Unit were set to take the stage.

For those who dared to pay attention amidst all the "strange" smoke that engulfed the innards of the Shaw, this surreal nod to rappers who have stolen away Fiddy's thunder over the past couple of years might have triggered some questioning -- "Why am I really here? What do I hope to get out of this?"

It's doubtful anyone really cared to make the connection or had enough wits left about them to even do so. However, it's needless to say Fiddy and Co. hadn't come to Edmonton to disappoint, and the crowd hadn't shown up to see anyone but Fiddy. It was pretty much a done deal that everyone would get what they wanted, no matter what it was.

So Fiddy and Banks rapped their guts out, giving the crowd more than enough reasons (and prompts) to get their "hands up." Fiddy also got a fair number of panties thrown at him (and one bra, which he managed to try on for a few minutes), eventually asking some guy in the crowd, "Are these your girlfriend's panties? 'Cause if they are, I gotta tell ya..."

Kudos to whoever threw said panties up there because Fiddy and Banks had found the perfect segue into their new single, I Like The Way She Do It (from their new album, T.O.S.). The whole thing was so spot-on one wonders if it hadn't been staged ahead of time.

But the party was on and G-Unit were relentless -- Gangsta S**t, P.I.M.P., Candy Shop, In Da Club and a whole bunch of impromptu, strung-along raps delivered in mix-tape fashion sealed the deal for the fans.

It's a good thing G-Unit delivered because, until that point, the evening had been dragging along quite a bit.

Vancouver-based old school-meets-new school R&B singer Elise Estrada proved she could sing her heart out without relying on any modern contraptions to mask a lack of talent. Unlike others, the 20-year-old can actually really belt out a tune while hopping from one end of the stage to the next, and she never gave up trying to get people to "make some noise" even though the crowd's lack of interest was obvious.

In the end, the "ultimate annoyance" award has to go to DeAndre Ramone Way, a.k.a. Soulja Boy. No matter what Kanye has said in support of Way, I have to side with Ice-T when he says the young rapper's music is, well, "garbage."

Stringing along various 30-second sound-alike "raps" atop the exact same snap beat as his breakout hit Crank That (yeah, that Superman song) does not make for a groundbreaking (or even an entertaining) performance.

The kids might have enjoyed the moment or, judging by the number of cell phones that went up when Crank That kicked in, might have been looking for something "cool" to post on their MySpace/Facebook page, but the only thing that would have saved Soulja Boy is if Ellen DeGeneres (who is a huge fan) had shown up to do her silly dance routine on stage with him.
