IT'S official: this weekend Sydney is bursting at the seams with celebrities.

A bevy of rap stars, supermodels and Hollywood royalty has arrived on our fair shores for everything from today's MTV awards and Randwick races to next week's Australian Fashion Week.

While the famous faces get the attention, equally amusing are their huge entourages - from personal cooks and hairdressers to bodyguards and globetrotting groupies.

And then there are the "hype men": heavily bejewelled rap groupies who are like the adult entertainment industry's "fluffer" girls - there to "hype" crowds at gigs in readiness for the "star" performance.

His fans know him as "Fiddy"; officially he is 50 Cent, one of the world's major rap stars.

On Wednesday he arrived with his personal party of 20, including the hysterically named Yayo, Whoo Kid and the incongruously named Lloyd Banks.

Among Fiddy's requests for his Sydney minders are two red Ferrari F50s, a bulletproof vehicle and Vitaminwater flown in and placed in all his dressing rooms and hotel rooms.

Fans are in for quite a show. Ablaze with diamonds on his fingers, wrists, ears and neck, Fiddy performs such classics as In Da Club, P.I.M.P. and I Get Money and usually throws fake $50 notes to the crowd bearing his likeness. But the biggest responses come when 50 Cent removes his shirt revealing a bullet-proof jacket with rhinestone-encrusted letters spelling out Curtis: his birth name.

While Celine Dion is at the opposite end of the musical spectrum, she has a lot in common with Fiddy when it comes to entourages.

When she celebrated her 40th birthday in Sydney a couple of weeks ago she shouted her eight staff and 20 friends and family a trip around the harbour. She also thanked her tour dancers by giving each a two-carat diamond.

Female rapper Eve appears to be on a budget, opting to travel here with only her manager, her bodyguard and personal assistant, a small posse she refers to as her "family".

However, none of the showbiz entourages compare with the travelling sideshow accompanying the Pope when he hits town in July for World Youth Day.

A 30-man entourage of Roman Curia officials, liturgical advisers, two doctors, media experts, a personal photographer, and security personnel, all of whom have highly specialised assignments, are expected to be joining Pope Benedict in Sydney.

But not even the Pope can compare with George Bush's entourage when the US President came for last year's APEC summit. The posse included a chef and four cooks, 15 sniffer dog teams, 50 White House political aides, 150 national security advisers and 250 secret service age.
