Article 03/29/08 - Gang Apparel Still Carried In NY Stores, Despite Promising To Pull Them

Despite promising to drop gang related caps and apparel from their inventory, New York City sports stores are still selling clothing and hats, which city officials say represent gang colors.

According to a report from New York's Daily News, stores within the city are carrying the product they promised to pull in August. In fact, at least a half-dozen of these stores continue to carry them through Brooklyn and the internet as of this week.

"Sports merchandise, already popular among gang members, is now being marketed directly -- and intentionally -- toward them and encourages their dangerous, illegal behavior," Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes said in a letter, written in mid-March, to Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner Bud Selig.

Some of the items in question include red Yankees hat with a five-point star that is worn by Bloods members and royal blue clothing with a six-point star sported by rival Crips, said the paper, as well as yellow Latin Kings hat with crowns.

"We can talk about case after case that we've prosecuted where a kid was beat up or in some cases murdered for wearing a color and walking into a particular area," said Hynes' gangs bureau chief, Diana Rodriguez. "It's attracting a clientele that is specifically gang members. It's a phenomenon that's happening throughout the entire city."

MLB officials told the Daily News that the officially licensed products were supposed to be removed last summer, and couldn't explain why they were still so widely available.

In October 2007, popular online urban retailer DrJays.com announced that they would no longer sell items deemed to be associated with, or endorsing gang paraphernalia.

They also carried t-shirts with slogans like "Never Snitch Ever" and "Respect The Shooter." As of press time, we could not locate those types of items n DrJays.com as they promised last year.

Well if you live in NY or are in the city alot in certain areas, you should no that the UBN rocks that 5 pointed star and the Crips represent that 6, and the Kings rock the crowns, its not that hard. So if you aint a banger, you shouldnt be wearing that shit.
