The hottest line of the night wasn't "Who's Mike Jones?" It was "Where's Mike Jones?"
The Houston rapper was nowhere in sight during Nov. 8's hour-and-a-half red-carpet walk. Jones didn't show up until the crowd was seated and waiting for the movie to begin. When Jones did arrive — his entourage in full effect behind him — he walked in calm and charismatic with a box of Crunch 'n Munch in his hand. "It was based off of my song Crunch 'n Munch," Jones said, laughing. Fans and local artists were all on hand to celebrate the opening of American Dream, a film about Jones' life and rise to stardom. "For the local artists to come out — that was big. It's Houston helping Houston," Jones said, referring to popular Houston rappers Bun-B, Slim Thug, Z-Ro and Chamillionaire, who all came out for the premiere at the AMC 30 Dunvale. "We're letting everybody know we're going to help and support each other." American Dream hits video stores Tuesday. According to Jones, the movie will premiere on BET Nov. 26. "I think it's really important that we as local artists support each other," Port Arthur rapper Bun-B said. "I think that it's a big day for a homegrown artist to have his life story told on film. It's not every day that these things happen." Houston rapper Z-Ro said his favorite part of the movie was the illustration of Jones' ladder to success. "That's really how it happens. People look down on you," Z-Ro said. "They have no faith in you. That's the everyday life (of a rapper). That's just how it happens. The underdog comes up and becomes successful." Dream centers on Jones' strife with his family and his struggle to break into the business without getting hustled by a record label. His girlfriend, Tasha, played by Chantal Nicole, who lives in Houston, helps him realize his dream and focus on trying to get to the top the right way. Dream also includes powerful messages, such as Jones' grandmother's advice: "Tell the truth about who you really are and you'll have fans for a lifetime." "I knew what the movie was going to be like, but I wasn't expecting it to have so many positive messages," said DeMontrea Flautry, who brought her 10-year-old daughter to see the movie. "It's something these young people really need to see." Jones' next big attraction comes Nov. 18, his birthday, when his Club Ice Age reopens. That night will be dedicated to the memory of Houston rapper Big Moe, who recently died. "For me it began as a dream," Jones says in the movie. "Funny thing about dreams: They aren't reality." American Dream 8 p.m. Friday on BET Available on DVD Tuesday |
