Name: Curtis James Jackson III. Better known as: Rapper 50 Cent of In da Club and Candyshop fame. Spent most of his childhood in and out of jail. Was a drug addict. Was once shot at nine times... and survived to tell the tale. But it’s all these experiences that amalgamated into one of the world’s highest selling rap artistes — 50 Cent.

He says of his latest semi-autobiographical album Curtis , which released this September, “I wanted to make the album ‘human’, I wanted the songs to capture emotions ranging from joy and laughter to aggression. It’s got a bit of me in it too. Some lines in it are from my childhood. It’s got a child’s innocence, it has a vulnerable feel to it.”

‘50 Cent’ stands for ‘change’. The name was derived from a Brooklyn robber in the 1980s who was also known as ‘50 Cent’. I robbed the name because it says everything I want it to say. I’m the same kind of person 50 Cent was. I provide for myself by any means.

From drug dealing to becoming one of the highest selling rap artists in the world, was yours the quintessential rags to riches rapper story?

I was a product of Queens, New York. I grew up all confused, with no parents around. I committed a lot of felonies. I began drug dealing at the age of 12.

But even amongst all this confusion, I used to write about issues that were sensitive to me when I was younger. Now, as an adult, I’m over all of it. Putting it all out there, through my music, and having people embrace it is also a way of dealing with it.

In 2002, I was discovered by Eminem, and with the help of Eminem and Dr Dre, I became what I am today. Is this the rags to riches rapper story? You bet! I’m arguably the biggest rapper on the planet today, outside of Eminem. He is the biggest, but he’s not active and that’s where I score over him. But he’s an amazing rap artist.

Hip-hop and rap have become popular genres of music today. What, according to you, is their USP?

I think there is a lot of congestion in the hip-hop industry. Everyone is entering into this genre of music because it has become commercialised.

Hip-hop is essentially about playing with different sounds, words and styles of singing, not just about playing an instrument and tapping your feet. It’s USP lies in its style and beats.

What is your message to youngsters who do drugs?

Wake up and say ‘No’ to drugs. One of my most treasured fan mails was from a child who requested me to stop taking drugs.

You were once shot at nine times, and survived. You say that incident was a turning point in your life?

It happened when I had just given up drugs. The confusion over why I survived the attack made me believe that God has put me here for a reason. At that point, I felt like I could do anything. It made me realise what I am to my family and fans. It made me see life with a different perspective.

How do you deal with competition in your field?

You have to do so much to separate yourself from the rest. I don’t see limits. You see someone ahead of you and even if you know you did good, you can do better. Given the competitive nature of hip-hop, people won’t allow you to be in the top position for long.

A secret the world doesn’t know about you?

50 Cent is an open record, everybody knows everything about me!
