A CHILLING poster glamorising gun violence is being used to promote the tour of an Amercian rap group due to visit Westbury.
Hip hop stars G Unit are playing at Club Ice on November 16, as part of a six-date UK tour, and a section of the poster advertising the event shows a man pointing a handgun.

Although G Unit are playing in Westbury, Club Ice is using a different poster, which does not show guns, and director Barry White said he had not seen the poster with the gun and had no plans to display it.

The poster was uploaded to the Wiltshire Times website at the weekend by Stealf Records, a company that has some of its own UK stars performing with G Unit, and is responsible for producing the poster.

As soon as the poster was discovered on the Wiltshire Times website it was removed.

Despite the Committee of Advertising Practice saying: "Marketers should avoid depicting guns that are pointing directly at the reader because such images are likely to cause offence or unnecessary fear and distress," nobody has complained about this poster to the Advertising Standards Authority.

Wiltshire Police have been made aware of marketing materials promoting the band G Unit, which portray members of the group posing with firearms.

Chief Inspector Charlie Dibble said: "The police do not condone this type of publicity which can sensationalise the use of firearms or imitation firearms to groups within our community.

"I am particularly concerned about the image portrayed and the potential effect on younger members of our community, some of whom hold these people up as role models. I do hope that community safety is not affected in the short or long term by this publicity material."

The poster is even more worrying given the surge in gun related crime, including a number of recent incidents in west Wiltshire involving children using replica weapons.

On Saturday police officers on patrol in Trowbridge Park seized an airgun from two nine-year-old boys who were waving the firearm at passers by.

Only the officers' quick actions managed to avert an armed response to the situation, but police are keen to point out further such incidents could be met with extreme force.

Inspector Dave Cullop of Trowbridge police said: "It may be perceived to be harmless fun by the youngsters involved, but they and their parents should be aware that the police response will be serious and positive and they could find themselves starring down the barrel of an armed response unit."

Rappers have been accused of promoting gun culture with stars like 50 Cent proudly talking about how many times they've been shot, and using lyrics with various references to graphic violence and shootings.

Westbury mayor Charlie Finbow hit out at the poster.

He said: "By the sounds of it a poster like this seems to just glorify gun crime.

"A lot of young people look up to these kind of groups and idolise them, and I would say you're bound to get a small element who would try to copy.

"Promoting music like this is in bad taste."

National retailers have shyed away from selling material by artists such as G Unit.

A spokesman for Asda's head office said: "We treat this sort of thing on a case by case basis.

"To my knowledge we do not stock 50 Cent or G Unit.

"We are a family retailer and we listen to our customers. If they don't want to see this sort of thing on the shelves then we will not stock it."

The Wiltshire Times contacted Stealf Records twice via email to ask why they are using this poster, but had no reply.
