Since his rise to hip-hop superstardom in 2003 with Get Rich or Die Tryin’ (which sold 872,000 units in the first four days of its release, making it the fastest-selling debut disc in the SoundScan era since 1991 and is currently 10 times platinum world wide) and subsequent hit The Massacre (the second biggest-selling album of the year and is now seven times platinum worldwide.), 50 Cent (a.k.a Curtis Jackson) has been busy with his new album, Curtis. And its true, since B.I.G and Tupac, the new breed coming through has had much to prove. 50 Cent is up to the challenge, and as he sings:

“I got a helluva flow, you should already know
Sold over 30 million records already
It's the third time around, you know how I get down
I'm hands down, pound for pound, the best around”

But is he all talk? Despite all his previous success (including 11 Grammy nominations, movies, videogames, books, clothing and footwear), Curtis is set to be his best album yet, and given all the recent controversy regarding 50 Cent Vs Kanye West, he had to come through with the goods. The superstar rapper’s third album includes production from Dr. Dre, Eminem and Timbaland; with guests including Eminem, Mary J. Blige, Justin Timberlake, Akon, Robin Thicke, and Nicole Scherzinger from the Pussycat Dolls.
“My reason for naming this album Curtis is I wanted this record to be human,” 50 explains. “So that means displaying joy, laughter, pain, anger, aggression, and fear. I think this album is going to change how people think of me.”

50 Cent’s dedication to the music cannot be overlooked. During studio time for many of the tracks that would be utilized on Curtis, the rap giant recorded an impressive 60 songs in a three month span, working with such headline producers as Kanye West, Will I Am, Pharrell, and Polow Da Don. Many of these songs will be featured on 50’s future release, Before I Self Destruct, an album that was originally scheduled to drop ahead of Curtis. But he quickly discovered that a more personal approach was needed.

“I went into artist mode with this album,” 50 Cent says of the recording process of Curtis. “I shut all my outside business concerns down. I wanted to re-introduce myself to people. I just wanted to say, ‘My name is Curtis Jackson III.’”

Perhaps the hip-hop world will look back at Curtis as a career-defining statement in the career of 50 Cent. They will no doubt hear the hungry, take-no-prisoners kid who settled for nothing less than landmark acclaim for his debut Get Rich. On the relentless Dr. Dre produced “Come And Go,” the brazen lyricist displays the menacing fire of a man “fresh out on bail,” and ready to reclaim the streets, over relentless drums and stabbing violins.

They will find the volatile, dangerous edge that made 50 one of hip-hop’s most controversial figures expressed in many songs on the album, including My gun go off, Man Down and I’ll still kill – his collaboration with fellow hip-hop up & comer Akon.

It’s the select collaborations on this album that make it the future hit that it is. Ayo Technology, featuring pop/r&b giant Justin Timberlake and producer Timbaland is futuristic, charismatic and smooth, “Aayooh, I'm tired of using technology, why don't you sit down on top of me”.

Follow my lead, featuring Robin Thicke has a catchy piano riff and subtle beat, being one of the slower tracks on the album it works well and Robin’s backing vocals are perfect. Peep Show featuring Eminem is cheeky, catchy and almost boppy. Eminem makes a late appearance which is always good value. Fire, which is a collaboration with Nicole Scherzinger and Young Buck contain the lyrics mentioned above, and a thick, synthesized base. 50 is aggressive, fired up and sexy as ever.

But for me, a huge Mary J. Blige fan, it’s All of Me that takes the cake. The music is all-star, brass, beats and style. The chorus is catchy, Mary is so cool, and 50 is convincing, albeit gangster. “Girl to know me's to love me, Im one of a kind, Even when you hate me you love me, forever your mine”.

There are plans for a seven-month blockbuster world tour in support of Curtis, more movie roles and more hits from his G-Unit label and crew. But as usual, 50 Cent has his own take on how he should be viewed by the public-at-large: as a survivor.

word to that, what kind of loser are you tryin to spread around kanye's album you shit bag. 50 lost fair and square. put the tissues away. its okay. who cares in the end, they collectively sold over 1.5 mill. thats a huge first week for rap in the past few years or so. Celebrate that part if you cant take the sting of 50 losing. I bought curtis and it lost. oh well, i liked curtis better than graduation. Graduation isnt as much my style. Why does it matter if more people agree with you? that wasnt a competition between 50 and kanyes fans, it was between them, so the only person that should be shakin his head is 50 for talkin all that extravagant shit leading up to this. Thats really why it hurts your ass so much.

But anyways, i think 50 got a point with that line from Fire about BIG and Pac. Ppl need to stop dickrydin dead ppl, i don't know how thats possible but come on, these niggas are dead, how can u beat that, by dying 2. Niggas get mad when i say Eminem is soon to be better than Pac and Jay-z is already better than BIG, its the truth, you can't fight ghosts. Before 2000, yes, BIG and Pac were the best to do it, but as of 2000 and on, move the fuck on, and their has been no bigger artists beside Eminem and Jay-Z, who proved themselves. Jay been pushing it for 10+ years, he IS better than BIG who even wasnt in the game half that long. U sayin I can avg 50 pts per game in tha NBA for 4 seasons and be the greatest ever? U have to prove yourself to get that crown as the best. BIG and Pac aint here, so lets move ON.
