09/05/07 - Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending

September 5th, 2007 | Author: Aliya Ewing

While the # 1 spot is still being held down by Disney's High School Musical 2 soundtrack (which has sold 1.2M records in 3 weeks), Hip Hop is still coming up short. Will the much awaited "release date battle" between 50 Cent and Kanye West spark a little fire in the pockets of consumers next week? We sure hope so.

Yung Joc's Hustlenomics debuted at #3 this week with 69k copies sold. UGK's first #1 album Underground Kingz has fallen 6 spots from #10 to #16 with 27k sold (283k total).

Talib Kweli's Eardrum, which debuted at #2 last week has nosedived to #20 this week with 24k sold (84k total), While Common's Finding Forever has also dropped from #15 to #21 also with about 24k sold (306k total).

Almost inexplicably, Akon's Konvicted album has jumped from #64 to #23 in its 42nd week on the charts. The sometimes controversial singer ( who was scrutinized after dirty dancing with an under age girl on stage, and also for violently throwing a 15-yr-old boy off of the stage at a separate concert) sold 22k this week ( 2.6M total).

Swizz Beatz takes the trophy for largest nosedive in Hip Hop this week as One Man Band fell from #7 to #42 on the charts, selling only 15k in its 2nd week (60k total). M.I.A.'s Kala also fell in its 2nd week, dropping from #18 to #49 with 13k sold (42k total).

Aesop Rock's None Shall Pass debuted at #50 this week with 13k sold, while Lil' Mo's Pain and Paper debuted at #112 with 6k sold.
