09/04/07 - Does Def Jam buy its own records???

50 really dropped some real shit during his recent interview claiming that Def Jam buys albums to make their artists look better. The allegation by one Curtis Jackson that Def Jam Records artificially inflates the soundscan numbers, the foundation by which Hip-hop's frontin' money machine is build upon, in order to make their artists look like bigger stars. The logic probably being that consumers will use the bandwagon mentality and buy the record because, shit everyone else is buying it.

The logic of buying records works in so many ways that benefit the artist that even if Def Jam doesn't buy records, it's a really good idea. Having an artist do well in the Billboard standings pretty much convinced me to buy The Evolution of Robin Thicke, and having an artist bomb saved me from buying the abomination known as The Preacher's Son by Wyclef Jean, who debuted at #22 back in 2003.

It is a little strange that all big Def Jam debuts drop like rocks after their first-week debuts. Most notably, Jay-Z's Kingdom Come, that sold 680,052 records in it's first week, and then dropped a whopping -79% to 139,933 records the next week. The same repetition occurred with Nas, putting up 354,524 sales in week one, and falling to 101,103 units in week two, a 71% decrease. Ludacris -67%, Bobby Valentino, -63% week 2, Fabolous -63%, etc.

Typically you can go to hitsdailydouble.com and get a running total of each week's record sales as they happen, which would give the execs at Def Jam ample time to go and "fix the situation." Remember the story that Nas was on pace to sell about 200 thousand albums for the first week of Hip-Hop is Dead, and suddenly that number jumps to 355 thousand. Which makes you think why Def Jam decided to not give Nas a video for a third single, if his soundscan numbers don't actually reflect his actual level of interest from the public, why bother spending money on another video? I mean a third video for an artist like Nas nowadays is pretty much a given, so something weird is going on -- like a company spending Nas' promotion budget on buying up records. 50 hasn't even dropped his album and he has 4 videos already. Fabolous might not even go gold and he has 3 videos out.

The same can be said for Jay-Z, why in the world would the largest first-week debut in Hip-Hop since Late Registration not have a third single? No obligatory Jay-Z and Beyonce single. The guy is the president of the record company and he doesn't get a third video.

What does that mean for Kanye? I don't know, but if Kanye drops 70% on his second week, and then doesn't drop a video for the T-Pain collaboration or something, we'll know some fishy stuff is going on. Note: Late Registration dropped 67% week 2.

Think about it, what makes them NOT BOY the records, when they could buy 200,000 copies and then sell them at the same price in the following weeks. If you think they dont give extra money, cuz they sell the bought records again, they just make their artists look better, it is even maybe a good move

He's Roc A Fella, but his distribution deal is through Def Jam that's run by L.A. Reid and Jay Z. So yes Def Jam has been known for buying cd's since the Russell Simmons era.
