Default 08/08/07 - Serius Jones Q&A: Battling, DTP, TI, Joe Buddens, & More

08/08/07 - Serius Jones Q&A: Battling, DTP, TI, Joe Buddens, & More

Disturbing Tha Peace rookie of the year recently sat down with ********* for a quick Q&A regarding the art of battling, his fellow group mates, the Strength In Numbers Compilation, and fellow Jersey rappers.

The compilation album Strength in Numbers, will drop August 28th. It will feature all of DTP’s new artists- Smallworld, Willy NorthPole, Serius Jones, Brolic D, Steph Jones, Playaz Circle and Block X-change. Fans will also hear new music from DTP veterans Ludacris, Shareefa, Bobby V, Lil Fate, Shawnna, I-20, Field Mob and the return of Chingy.
*********: Prior to being signed, you were heavy into the battle circuit, are you ever gonna step into the ring again?...Maybe a Fight Klub battlee or something?

Serius: I don’t think so, at the end of the day it’s almost like—let me try an come up with a good analogy. It’s like boxing versus street fighting..theres a fighting named Kimbo, don’t know if you’ve heard about him..he made his living by fighting on the streets and they were youtubing his fights so he had big underground following and eventually he wound up getting his own pay per view. Once you get to a certain plateau and once you get to a certain level of exclusivity and you’re a buyable product that people would pay to see, you can’t keep cheapening your brand by putting yourself in a position just battling regular people that have nothing to lose.

When it comes down to it, it’s a integrity thing too. Battling is a real funny thing, it’s street fighting versus boxing—boxing is controlled and professional…but battling is all or nothing no matter what, you can go down at any time and I’m the best guy to ever do this, I don’t know what more I can prove.

There are a lot of battles that haven’t been released to the public though, so there’s a lot more of that coming.

*********: How did a Jersey boy and up on a predominantly southern label? ....

Serius: The only thing southern about DTP is Luda [laughs]...Most of the artist in DTP are from New York, it’s only a southern thing because of Luda.

*********: Are you gonna move out to the south now or are you remaining in the tristate?

Serius: I was moving to the South before actually, it’s cheaper and more comfortable. Signing to DTP doesn’t have much to do with it, but there’s a lot of money to get here.
*********: A lot of the times, rappers who come up through the battle circuit don’t do necessarily well on a mainstream platform…how do you plan on breaking that curse?

Serius: I don’t know why people always get that. Every successful East Coast rapper was on the battle circuit. They just didn’t have the fight klubs and the smack dvds—they didn’t have any way to broadcast it. Eminem is one of the hottest rappers to ever do it, Biggie, Jay , Nas, DMX, Beanie Siegel, any mc in the east coast, you have to battle—it’s one of the requirements of being an East Coast Mc. You have to hold your own.

Even people like 50 cent, even though he’s not a real lyrical rapper. Coming up in the hood, you have to rep your hood, thats the way we represent our neighborhood and our talent—by testing it against another mc.The only thing is that over saturating the game right now is that, battling is now looked at some hoodrat underground backpack shit…until some dude like myself comes along and takes it to the next level.

I’m a student of the KRS-Ones, the Big Daddy Kane’s, Rakims.

*********: The DTP roster is pretty extensive, are you worried that your project might get pushed to the side or overlooked seeing as there are 14 other in the works?

Serius: Well, that would be dumb for them..pushing Serious Jones to the side for something else[laughs]..I’m my own damn label!—Cause I gotta make my own path and decide my own destiny. I can’t sit back and wait for someone else to do it, I just shot two videos—Me, I shot em..I get my own studio time, do my own mixtapes, I’m on my grind, but I’m working on my album at the same time.

In terms of support from a label, it’s really hard to get next-level support from any label right now. The game for a rookie, it’s not like it was back in the days when they’d spend crazy money on you and don’t care.
*********: I’d like to get your opinion on a fellow Jersey rapper, What do you think about Joe Budden, a lot of people consider him lazy which is the reason why we’ve still yet to receive a new album from him..do you agree with that?

Serius: [Laughs], you’re tryna get me to talk bad about people?, I don’t know what he’s situation is. I don’t understand someone not going all out cause thats the only way I know how to do it. If I’m doing something, I’m tryna be the best at it, I’m not just doing it to be doing it.

*********: What do you think of TI?

Serius: It’s not important what I think of TI, what’s important is what ya think about me!..[laughs]..I think he’s talented..I don’t necessarily listen to him or anything.

*********: The saying Quality Over Quantity comes to mind, what can we expect from Strength In Numbers?

Serius: Honestly, I haven’t heard the finished product but I do know there’s some bangers on there…definitely some talented artists. I’m just here to lend my energy to the compilation, I’m gonna always body my part in whatever I do. But you’ll definitely enjoy this album.

*********: And when can we hear a full album from Serius Jones?

Serius: You can hear one right now actually, go to myspace.com/seriusjones and you can download or purchase the King Me Mixtape…It’s actually an album but I did it like a mixtape.

I’m also working on Life Is Serious—its a classic album..the hottest shit i can think of…I’m about to fuck your head up when you hear my shit.
