Rhymes and misdemeanors just part of their rap sheets

Until now, the charges on their rap sheets ranged from the relatively petty - spitting on hotel staff, attacking manicurists, dissing a judge, shoplifting - to the federal offenses of conspiracy and perjury.

But Remy Ma has upped the ante among New York's misbehaving hip-hop mavens with her arrest on charges of attempted murder, assault and firearms possession after a longtime pal was shot in the stomach.

She has plead not guilty but her alleged crimes further cement the rappers' collective reputation as the bad girls of the music industry.

Ma, 27, who yelled: "I didn't shoot nobody" at reporters gathered outside her home yesterday, is the latest in a lineup of female rap stars to fall foul of the law.

She claims on her Web site that rapping is "how I vent ... when I'm mad," but violence appears to have taken its place more than once.

The mother of two was accused of firing ata man in 2003 and was previously arrested for allegedly thumping a teenager, throwing a statue through a window and making death threats.

"It's surprising when this happens, but I'm not totally shocked," said Devin Lazerine, editor in chief of Rap-Up magazine. "Remy always had that thuggish persona, and, though you don't want to believe it, there's a chance it could be true.

"It gives people another bad impression of hip hop, because everyone thinks it's violent and the artists are always shooting each other, which is just not true."

Ranking the other bad girl rappers

LIL' KIM (AKA KIMBERLY DENISE JONES)

She's just 4-feet-11, but this larger-than-life Brooklyn native's teen years were dogged by allegations of marijuana possession.

Renowned for barely there costumes and explicit lyrics beginning with her 1996 debut, "Hard Core," 33-year-old Kim's bad-girl image was cemented with a $50,000 fine and almost 10 months behind bars. That came after a 2005 perjury conviction relating to a 2001 shootout involving members of her entourage outside New York's Hot 97 studios.

Trouble rating: 5

FOXY BROWN (AKA INGA FUNG MARCHAND)

Foxy got a 30-day suspended sentence for spitting on two hotel workers and missing a court date in 1997, and was charged with driving with a suspended license in March 2000.

She was in court again last year after a 2004 nail-salon fracas, resulting in three years' probation and anger-management classes. After violating the terms of her probation, one more lapse of judgment could send her straight to jail.

Trouble rating: 4

LISA 'LEFT EYE' LOPES (AKA LISA NICOLE LOPES)

After struggling with alcoholism, the TLC star made news when she torched fiancé Andre Rison's mansion after accusing him of being unfaithful.

At the time of her arrest, she was covered in bruises after an altercation with Rison. She was sentenced to five years' probation after being convicted of arson. Declared bankrupt in July 1995, Lisa became involved in charity work in Honduras before her death there in a car crash in April 2002.

Trouble rating: 3

EVE (AKA EVE JIHAN JEFFERS)

Having once described herself as a "pit bull in a skirt," the 28-year-old former stripper proved she could hold her own with the boys as the only female signed to Ruff Ryders during her 1999 chart debut, "What Ya Want."

She spent the night in an L.A. county jail after a DUI arrest on April 26 and pleaded no contest at the June 28 court appearance, where she was sentenced to a $390 fine and 36 months probation. The alcohol-detecting ankle bracelet she's now sporting should complement her Fetish clothing line nicely. The label's trademark? A devil's tail, of course.

DA BRAT (AKA SHAWNTAE HARRIS)

The potty-mouthed rapper was arrested for assault after pistol-whipping a woman in a nightclub, but settled the case with a plea bargain in 2001. Convicted of misdemeanor reckless conduct, Da Brat accepted 12 months' probation and a $1,000 fine.

Now a reality-TV fixture, she lost her temper on "The Surreal Life" and told AllHipHop.com recently, "I've been in enough trouble where I learned not to do stupid things anymore."
