Police Investigate Akon "Body Slam" Incident At NY Concert
Wednesday - June 6, 2007 Police in the upstate New York town of Fishkill are hoping to speak with the concertgoer who was taped being pitched into the audience by Akon during the R&B star's performance on Sunday (June 3). According to the Poughkeepsie Journal, Fishkill police have identified the fan as a 15-year-old male from Rockland County. His name has not been released. Fishkill police had been seeking the young man since Monday (June 4) to learn whether he sough to press criminal charges against Akon. Sunday, Akon appeared at the Dutchess Stadium as part of WSPK 104.7 FM's 13th annual KFEST concert. Heather Idema, who attended Sunday's show, told the Journal that someone in the crowd threw something at Akon and the object flew past his shoulder. According to Idema, Akon then said, "Come on everybody, point him out, point him out. Who is he?" Once he was pointed out, Idema says Akon asked a security guard to bring him to the stage, adding that he "pretty much body-slammed him into the crowd. He just threw him down." [Watch a video of the incident here] Detective Lt. John Berlingieri of the Fishkill Police said the department has discussed the possibility of questioning Akon about the incident, but as of now, no criminal charges have been filed. Sunday's incident marks the second time the Senegalese-born star has been scrutinized for his interactions with an underage fan. During an April 12 concert in Trinidad, Akon was videotaped doing a provocative dance that simulated sex with a girl who he later learned was 14. Verizon withdrew their sponsorship from the tour, which featured Gwen Stefani and Akon, as a result. Akon has since issued an apology for the incident in Trinidad, adding that he wasn't aware the girl was underage. WSPK general manager Jason Finkelberg said his staff discussed Akon's history prior to the show. After learning of Sunday's incident, he told the Journal, "I would have preferred he wouldn't have done that," before adding in Akon's defense, "I don't think he intended malice on this guy. I think it was in the spirit of the show...I think it's kind of getting blown out of proportion." Paula DeAnda, Gym Class Heroes and Omarion were among the acts at Sunday's KFEST concert. Source-sohh
