05/16/07 - What's Left Of 07' (Albums)

Nearly six months in, 2007 hasn’t exactly been a landmark year for the rap album - Devin released a near masterpiece, but otherwise I haven’t been particularly wowed by anything. [1] But shit usually picks up around the late second quarter. Here are somethings that might come out and might be good. Release dates subject to change.

Three 6 Mafia - Last 2 Walk (Sony/Hypnotized Minds) 5/22
Seems like the buzz for this has died down considerably ever since they became MTV/Pop Culture poster boys. But let’s be honest Three 6 was on top of their game before the Oscar frenzy and Pat’s album featured some of their best production in a minute. I see no reason why their sound would change up. It’s not like they have Paris Hilton on the album. They have Al Kapone and Spanish Fly.

Swizz Beats - One Man Band (Universal) 6/5
Eh… I can’t help feel like Swizz is solely getting by on the fact that he’s the last New York artist standing. Like that Ja Rule song. The dudes riding for him now were probably the same ones crying about Casio Presets in ‘99. Still he does have beats. He’s always had beats. I just don’t know if he can hold down an entire album with his shrill and simplistic raps. And I usually like shrill, simplistic raps.

Chamillionaire - The Ultimate Victory (Universal) 6/5
Chamillionaire might be the best rapper under 30 (assuming Wayne’s 47) but he seems unable to make a great album (not with out Paul, at least). Production list has a lot of promise - Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Rick Rock, Just Blaze, Three 6, Mannie Fresh. But at the same time also includes dudes like Akon, Scott “Can I Borrow Your Yacht” Storch & The Runners who are no doubt going to lace him with some club raver shit. And Cham’s robot flow is going to flounder over that sort of thing. Plus the lead single was a mess and worst producer alive EMINEM has a beat. Still the presence of RICKY MUHFUCKIN D is reassuring.

Fabolous - From Nothin’ To Somethin (Def Jam) 6/12
I’m not sure why the bring new york back dudes aren’t behind Fabolous like they are the Saipooses of the world. “Breathe” is still one of the greatest rap songs ever recorded and though dude has hit some bumps in the road, he probably could probably make a(nother) great album if he could just get comfortable in his own skin and get some suitable production. Sadly, nothing I’ve heard from this album leads me to believe he’s headed in that direction.

Pharoahe Monch - Desire (SRC) 6/26
Hands down the greatest rapper still on a major label. Also he’s from New York too. The “Body Baby” video is on some suspect Gnarls Barkley business, but all signs seem to indicate that it’s an anomaly. It’s good to hear Monch rapping dark again with “What It Is” (even if it does sound like an Equinox outtake). My only complaint is that half the album has already leaked to mixtapes and the many videos over the past two years. Still six new Pharoahe tracks at once will be huge.

50 Cent - Curtis (Interscope/Shady/Aftermath/G-Unit) 6/26
I think I’m going to sit this one out. But ladies: I understand it will feature lots of activities and fun things to do.

TI - TI vs. TIP (Atlantic/Grand Hustle) 7/3
What Bol said. I don’t trust Wyclef. Or a song called “PA$TA.”

Common - Finding Forever (GOOD/Geffen) 7/10
So far Com’s one for one, but the success of this album hinges on Kanye’s ability to find Dilla’s ghost and actually do something interesting with him (ayo?). And by “Dilla’s Ghost” I mean a box full of floppy disks from the Fantastic Vol. 2 sessions.

UGK - Underground Kingz (Jive) 7/17
I heard this eight months ago, it was pretty nice then. I somehow suspect Jive has found a way to fuck things up since then. And it will still probably be one of the best albums on this list.

Fabo - GIK Music (Asylum)
Surely another classic from the D4L front man.

Lil’ Jon - Crunk Rock (BME)
Anyone…? “Party Like a Rockstar” sort of stole his thunder, as Bfred noted. I will give Jon this much credit - he’s pretty much the only rapper to actually show any kind of taste in rock music. [2] But at the same time, I’m not so confident about the involvement of the dude from POD.

Raekwon - Only Built For Cuban Linx II (Aftermath)
As I told you this time last year: I’m (still) pessimistically optimistic.

Turf Talk - West Coast Vaccine (Sick Wid It) 6/5
The Federation - It’s Whatever (Reprise) 6/26
Mistah FAB - Da Yellow Bus Ridah (Thizz/Atlantic)
Who said hyphy was dead? These are the artists from the movement that might actually transcend gimmick status.

Saigon - The Greatest Story Never Told (Fort Knox/Atlantic)
Saigon is overrated, but the prospect of an album produced entirely (mostly?) by Just Blaze alone makes this one worth watching.

DJ Drama - Gangsta Grillz - The Album (Grand Hustle/Atlantic)
ART OF STORYTELLIN’ PT. 4. NUFF SAID.

Lil Wayne - The Carter 3 (Cash Money)
Pushed back to ‘08. Disqualified.

Kanye West - Graduation (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam)
Could go either way. I haven’t loved any of his full lengths, but they both had a few moments of brilliance.

Beanie Sigel - The Soultion (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam)
Freeway - Free At Last (Roc-a-Fella/G-Unit/Def Jam)
Peedi Crakk - Prince of The Roc (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam)
I’d like to pretend that State Prop still exists. All three of these artists have it in them to make an absolutely classic album, but Jay doesn’t really seem to put much faith in any of them at this point. Maybe 50 can save Free. G-Unit proved surprisingly un-meddlesome on that Lil’ Scrappy record they co-released.

E-40 - The Ball Street Journal (Sick Wid It/BME)
If you listen to Ghetto Report Card you can hear the exact moment where 40 gives up. It happens immediately after “White Girl.” Then Lil’ Jon takes the reigns and it becomes a record about getting blow jobs. Or something. Hopefully his new record will see him return to that soil spit fast rap shit. But, as we discussed last week, success tends to breed complacency.

Other albums I am looking forward to that you fruit flies will probably ignore even if they drop: Young Bleed - Once Upon a Time in Amedica; The Fixxers (DJ Quik & AMG) - Midnite Life; K-Rino & Dope E - COD: Second Edition; B.O.B. - TBA; Murs - Murs For President; Currency - Music To Fly To

That’s a whole lot of albums though. And I’m sure my ever so helpful readers will recommend a few I forgot. Could be a good year after all.
[1] Haven’t gotten a chance to pick up HAWK or Z-Ro yet…
[2] It really shatters my image of MOP to know that Danzini listens to fucking Nickleback. And for that reason alone, I am not including Yearly Physical on this list. Well that and the fact it’s clearly never coming out.

This will be one of the best albums out this year...

That and Saigon is NOT OVERRATED. Warning shots is a 10/10 classic!
