05/15/07 - Lloyd Banks, ABC, Glasgow

The reality of young black America may not mean much on the streets of Glasgow, but there are still parallels to be drawn between the work of the rapper Lloyd Banks - born in Baltimore, based in New York - and the lives of young Glaswegians.

Sadly, these tend to rest on the themes of sexism, savage self-sufficiency (the hip-hop chant of "make money, money / take money, money" was in evidence here), and an undercurrent of casual, pride-afflicted violence. While the questionable gangsta-rap mythology that Banks exemplifies at least comes from his own experience - he was shot in 2001 and cleared of gun charges last year - a certain type of fan is always going to take the words of him and his contemporaries as a manifesto for life.

Oddly, for a man affiliated with 50 Cent's popular sometime rap group G-Unit, Banks's show was well short of a capacity turnout. Most of the crowd seemed to be drawn from a demographic of students and skaters.

Yet a contingent of tracksuited hardmen could also be found amid the crowd, and their presence highlighted the difference between US and UK hip-hop. British artists such as Mike Skinner or Dizzee Rascal are more balanced and ironic, using humour against themselves and their foes, while Americans don't skirt around their machismo - perhaps a by-product of playing regularly in front of armed audiences.

So Banks, backed by two sidemen and a surly security man, strutted and shouted. His show, backed by an offstage DJ, wasn't a subtle affair, but that's not to take away from the bullish rawness of it, nor the tension that the very best hip-hop shows are capable of.

"How many y'all finished school?" asked Banks, to a moderate cheer. "OK, so I ain't the smartest guy in here..." Another pricelessly misdirected moment came as he attempted to convince the crowd to practise safe sex "'cause you don't want no babies or no nasty diseases that's gonna kill y'all in six months". Perhaps the NHS are in the market for a new spokesman.

Despite the torso-flashing conceit of "I'm So Fly" or the self-aggrandisement of "Warrior", you just know that Banks's show is truer to himself than most other recording artists. His pose during G-Unit's "Eye For An Eye" or the ghetto nihilism of "Born Alone, Die Alone" (the "respect me" lyric as much a plea as a command) is the same pose he uses on the street; the same front for his audience as for the world. And every single song, as so often happens in this world far removed from Glasgow, ends in a whipcrack gunshot.

i went to that show but them cats in the abc was not feeling dude apart from me and a few of my boys ...i thought he done a great set but like the guy said it was mostly skaters in there but props to banks for a good show

i pretty sure he aint been doing for 6 months and cam got movies and shit and ceo of a record label. but i think banks should use the 50 approach and simple down his muzik and come with some more high energy hooks like im so fly

he's been touring for 4 month now and all around the world, he went to asia, australia, europe... and i think that banks should one or to "simple" songs on the next album; stop with the r&b shit and continue with songs like survivor!!!

The show was hott, but i dont no if it was advertised enough, thats maybe why it wasnt 100% full, but was a real hott show no doubt! I just dunno if buck is gonna go overseas next or when banks finishes his solo tour 50 might burst out n go next but everyone go with him, just wait n see!
