Since starting his career making beats for Obie Trice and Proof, producer Emile has graduated to making records alongside such legends as Ice Cube and Ghostface Killah. Now the talented 26-year-old is poised for new collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes and Papoose making him a surefire Player to Watch in 2007.
Born and raised in Buffalo, NY, hip-hop served as an early haven for Emile, who, influenced by DJ Premier and Dr. Dre, started deejaying as a teen. A self-professed juvenile delinquent, Emile became determined to direct his energies toward music instead. Certain he could make a successful career in music, Emile dropped out of high school by ninth grade, eschewing the classroom in exchange for the full-time job that would help him acquire much needed DJ equipment. "I was working 40 hours a week doing terrible jobs. I would wake up at 8 in the morning, go to work until 5, come home, DJ at all the clubs, get home at 4 in the morning and get up and go to work the next day. That's how I saved money and got equipment," Emile recalled. Emile would continue to work in Buffalo as a mixtape, club and radio DJ until he was 18, when he made the move to New York City in order to better pursue his music production goals. The move would pay off within a year, when Emile was able to sell his first beat to R&B super producer Rodney Jerkins in 2000. "I was friends with an engineer at the time and he got a job with Rodney Jerkins," Emile remembered. "He played Rodney my beats. He was working on a rap project at the time and he bought one of them. I got a check for like three grand. That was it. I quit my job. It wasn't too long after that one of my best friends from Detroit was tour managing D12 and he hooked me up with Proof." Proof took an immediate liking to Emile's beats and flew him to Detroit, where he introduced him to several other artists in the city. Emile's relationship with Proof would quickly result in numerous placements being added to his once blank discography. "Proof was the type of dude that where he liked my beats and he wanted to see people rap on them. It kind of launched everything, getting on Obie's album and getting on a platinum album with my name next to Eminem because I co-produced with Eminem. I now had something that I could go to A&R's with, and when they say, 'what have you done?' I could say 'this.' Before, it was kinda like 'nothing.' This kind of certified me," Emile said. Since scoring his first placements on Obie Trice's 2003 album, Emile has gone on to work with AZ, Cormega, Rhymefest, Funkmaster Flex, Remy Ma, Terror Squad, M.O.P. and many others. Though much of his success has come from making rap music, Emile recently collaborated with UK soul singer Ian Brown and hopes to continue diversifying into other genres. "I look at Rick Rubin who can still do hip-hop, can produce a Johnny Cash and can do anything pretty much and its all quality. As I get more mature I'd like to branch out," Emile explained. "I listen to all kinds of music. Hip-Hop is what got me into music in general. It made me like other music because I started buying records and listening to old soul music and now that's pretty much all I listen to, but also rock as well and all these other things. It all comes from hip-hop because hip-hop samples everything."
