People are wondering what's up between Sean Penn and Eve after the actor showed up at close to 4 a.m. yesterday when the rapper-actress was jailed in L.A. Cops busted the Philly-born beauty on suspicion of driving under the influence after she totaled her gold Maserati at about 2:45 a.m. on Hollywood Blvd.

A friend of the Grammy winner (full name: Eve Jeffers) tells us she was surprised when Penn showed up at the station house - though the source believed they may have partied earlier in the evening.

"He offered to bail her out," the friend says. "Eve said, 'Thank you, but no.' The paparazzi were already gathering outside. Sean said, 'Let me leave before this becomes something bigger than it is.'"

The "Barbershop" actress ended up posting $30,000 on her own.
She was booked on misdemeanor drunken driving charges. She's due in court May 17.
