Ludacris has thanked fans for their support following his father’s death on Sunday.

Wayne Brian Bridges died aged 52 in an Atlanta hospital following a long battle with an unspecified illness, Ludacris’ publicist says.

Ludacris, real name Chris Bridges, dedicated his Best Rap Album award (Release Therapy) to his ailing dad, saying: "This goes out to my father, who's in critical condition right now…I love you to death."

"We are overwhelmed by the generous outpouring of love, condolences and support from family members, friends, fans and the many well-wishers," reads a statement issued on Monday from Ludacris’ family.

"We thank you for your prayers and hope you will understand our need for privacy during this sorrowful time."

The statement adds Wayne was a "a great influence on his son", who also won the best rap song Grammy at this year’s ceremony.

The Bridges family have not made the cause of Wayne’s death public and are planning a private funeral in Atlanta.

yea man R.I.P to Wayne Bridges, man 52 is very young age to go.. i hope this doesnt stop luda from doin wut he been doin, i hope this makes him a stronger and even better artist(i mean hes great already)
