02/23/07 - Friday Fire: Lil Wayne's The Best Right Now?, Andre 3000, Ashanti & More

Your Fireman is baaaack. What up, world? It's your boy W-W-W-dot because I have a Way With Words, period, back at it.

First and foremost, my badd about last week. We had snow in New York City, which seemed to knock out my Internet connection. But I'm back now. We're going to go all the way in today, like Ray J did Kim Kardashian.

Here we go, follow me now:

My boy and I were talking about the growth of Lil Wayne yesterday, while I was driving. I was driving from Brooklyn to Queens, looking for a fucking slice of pizza, but no dice. So, I had to go to Dunkin' Donuts. Got me a mean and greasy sausage, bacon and cheese omelet on a croissant. Nice late night fix to say the least, but back to the lecture at hand.

We were talking about how quickly Lil Wayne has grown as an MC. He's still a malnutritioned lil' fella and truth be told, he could have used that sandwich I ate, but we're talking about mic prowess here. We both said that we have been listening to a lot of Weezy F. Baby lately just because, well, he's on everybody's damn songs.

He's flooding the industry, sort of like 50 Cent did back on 2003. If it wasn't 50's "Wanksta" or "In Da Club," it was one of the many remixes 'Fif jumped on. And it's the same for Weezy, who has his songs with Baby on the radio, to go along with one of the many, many remixes he has jumped on.

But the question lingered in our conversation. How did Wayne improve so quickly? I mean, let's keep it funkier than Bonecrusher's armpits on "Celebrity Fit Club." Wayne used to be kind of wack, when he was a teenager. Out of all the Ca$h Money Millionaires, dude was the last I wanted to hear on the mic. He just had wack rhymes and he said them with not even half the confidence and swagger he has now. So, still pondering I brought up the infamous ghostwriter question -- "Does Wayne have a ghostwriter?"

"Let's say Weezy has his rhymes written, but it's the way he's saying his lines, which is so crazy," my boy fired back, to which I agreed.

As it is right now, who knows if Wayne has a ghostwriter, but even if he does, it's not the reason why dude is so hot on everyone's list. With Wayne it starts and ends with swagger. Dude says what he wants to say, with emphasis and stretch on specific words. His wordplay has grown tremendously and his flow is absolutely ridiculous.

Me, personally... I have lost count on how many artists Wayne has bodied on their own songs. Weezy's verses absolutely STAND out. Take Chris Brown's "Poppin'" on which Weezy F. spits: "We can get it poppin' like a mack 10 / Brrrr-Dat Dat Dat on your back back back / I smack smack smack that / And I'm strapped with an automatic tongue / And it goes Brrrr-At-Dat Dat Dat."

Lines like that have no poignancy to them, but they sure stay with you, as being hot in the song.

And don't let me get started on lines he has (for days, months and maybe years) on the Dedication 2. "I'm sick / I don't spit, I vomit / Got it? / One egg short of the omelet."

Once again, no crazy poignant meaning like a Talib Kweli, but a hell of a lot more exciting to listen to. Word to Kweli a.k.a. the CNN of hip-hop. Anyway, we both drew the conclusion that we don't have a problem with Wayne saying he's the best right now. See I'll have a problem with that statement if it comes out the mouth of a Murphy Lee or someone like that. But not Weezy. With Wayne when he says that right now, it comes across to me like he's in love with his craft and he's going for the top spot. All that sh-- about him being better than Hov...he may want to fall back on. But if the Carter III turns out to be an outright classic...Watch Out! Weezy season has begun!

Andre 3000
I touched on remixes earlier and I'll say this: Right now the heaviest verse in a remix is by Andre 3000. I mean, Jeez fucking Louise! Andre rips that "Walk It Out (Remix)" to shreds. I'm talking mince meat. I PUUUUULLLLLED UUUUUP on that remix so many times, I don't know how the rest of the joint even sounds. My apologizes One Eye Willie. But man just reading these lines will hit you...

Moving on, I'm fucking tired about hearing about this beef between Tru Life and Jim Jones. Man, these cats should concentrate on their music. Please. And now Memphis Bleek is taking a more vocal role in the beef, calling Dipset "pussies." Great. From now anytime I hear something about a rapper from another rapper, I'm doing like Andre 3000: "IF YOU SAY REAL TALK, I PROBABLY WON'T TRUST YA."

Man, I don't really care for this Ashanti song, "You Can't Deny It." She came on the R&B scene; scratch that, the studio singer scene by sampling the Isley Brothers' "Between The Sheets," which Notorious B.I.G. already famously sampled. Hey, I let it slide. Cool, go for yours, baby is what I said. But now she samples Tupac's "Ambitionz Az A Rider" and for real son, I could do without hearing her croon over that. At least she added Jim Jones on the song to dirty it up, but still.
