HIT THE REP
5/Pretty Ricky/Late Night Special – Them FLA boyz take a mild -53% drop bringing them to just under 200K in their second week. This is a case of selling more because there’s nothing else to compete with you at the moment…timing is everything in this business. 6/Akon/Konvicted – This is that special “magic” every label exec dreams about. When a project develops its own legs and starts running off on its own wind. Akon is in a special zone right now, don’t hate just celebrate! With a +12 Mr. Convicted makes the push for 2 million…which in these times is quite a feat. 9/Robin Thicke/Evolution of Robin – So far the story of the year as the Interscope Machine makes everybody pump their breaks on the slick talk. So far its R&B > Hip Hop in the ’07. 12/Jill Scott/Jill Scott Collaborations – Its time to cash it out…50K first week. 16/Justin Timberlake/FutureSex-LoveSounds – 39K this week as the Memphis native rides this week of physical CD resurgence as he lands at 2.6 million in 21 weeks eyeing the 3 mill mark. If this was 2002 he would be doing Destiny Child numbers right now. 28/Fergie/Dutchess – Two years ago Lloyd Banks had these numbers, now the street rap hustle on a mainstream level is on life support as the Pop-Hop game reign supreme. Fergie > South Side Queens 34/Mary J Blige/Reflections: A Retrospective – Throwaway album that still goes Gold in 8 weeks. All hail the Queen 49/Snoop Dogg/Blue Carpet Treatment – 750K in 11 weeks as the Big Dogg makes preparations for a smooth landing as he heads towards retirement status. Don’t overstay your welcome…go out a winner! 54/Jay Z/Kingdom Come – 1.3 mill plus in 11 weeks. Thanks for bringing some momentary excitement into the hip hop game last November but now its time for a new crop to carry it forward. 58/John Legend/Once Again – Song selection over natural talent keeps the homie on course for another platinum plaque on the wall. 71/Bow Wow/Price of Fame – Yes this is a flop but don’t worry Bow Wow, you can always blame it on the Internet. 82/Game/Doctor’s Advocate – Why wasn’t Game in the new Bone documentary on gangs in L.A. that premiered last night on HBO? Anyhow a +7 takes game a step closer to platinum status. Rappers please no more talk about platinum in the first week, this is 2007 not 2003. 98/Trick Daddy/Back By Thug Demand – Nearly 10K this week as the Liberty City native takes it on cruise control as the sun sets over the ocean. 113/Lil Scrappy/Bred 2 Die-Born 2 Live – The days of getting a catchy song, working radio and poof, a million records sold is just about history. You have to work it from the ground up and get the fans on your side. Throwing money around in the video tells them you don’t need their money and the results are in the numbers (215K in 9 weeks). 126/Jim Jones/Hustler’s P.O.M.E. – Show money > Label money all day. If your stage performance is on point AND you have hit records you will eat. If your show is wack and your waiting on a royalty check from the label to survive then you’re history. Oh yea +325 at the 13 week mark. 138/Gnarls Barkley/St. Elsewhere – Nearly 1.2 million…good look for the Goodie Mob native who’s been on the grizzle for a good stretch. Grammy time…watch the stock rise! 153/Cherish/Unappreciated – Exactly at Gold in 25 weeks. Today’s Gold is yesterday’s platinum. Add in some ringtones and you got a few dollars cracking. Now do you as an artist receive a royalty check…hell no. Your in the hole buddy with a new budget if you don’t get dropped. 170/Eminem/Curtain Call – I ask the same question everybody else does…who the hell is still picking this album up? 61 weeks on the chart. Along with Mary J and the Pussycat Dolls (all under the IGA machine mind ya) this album got the longest time logged on the Top 200 on the urban side. 181/Fat Joe/Me Myself & I – Maybe this song is on the radio so much I don’t have the need to purchase it at this point. A little obscurity can help. 160K in 10 weeks. 185/Kirk Franklin/Hero – 700k plus sold as the church holds down the good homie. 196/Sean Price/Jesus Price Supastar – 5K the first week for the Boot Camp representer and I’m not mad at all! This is where it is when you’re looking for authentic street hip hop. Forget radio, hit the online streets and slow cook your favor. Six months from now you will be surprised at his number totals…don’t sleep! |
