02/07/07 - Prince's Halftime Performance Under Fire

The Super Bowl half time show is under fire again.

Critics were up in arms a couple years ago over Janet’s “wardrobe malfunction” and now, Prince is the target of criticism. The singer has been accused of purposely creating an X-rated image during his performance.

If you caught the rain soaked half time show, you were able to get a glimpse of Prince’s “phallic shaped” guitar during the performance of Purple Rain. A large beige cloth was used during the performance to simulate an erection.

For those not up on Prince history, the singer was known to make his guitar “ejaculate” during previous performances of the song.

The harshest criticism comes from New York Daily News television correspondent David Bianculli, who labeled the display "a rude-looking shadow show" that "looked embarrassingly rude, crude and unfortunately placed."

The incident was also the subject of jokes from Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert and The Late Show’s Craig Furguson.

Despite the minor uproar from the Daily News, CBS has gotten few complaints about the half time show
AP entertainment writer Douglas J. Rowe called it one of “the best half time performances- ever”.
