Almost any rapper who came stamped with the approval of a top emcee had his career path paved for him.

No longer.

Lately, some formerly big mike-men with ties to powerful posses have seen their sales wither.

"Rotten Apple," the new CD from Lloyd Banks, a major player in 50 Cent's G Unit, has, well, rotted fast. In just seven weeks, it has fallen to No. 150 on Billboard's Top 200 album list with sales of just 271,494. Banks' previous CD, "Hunger for More," sold more than 1.5 million. Radio didn't help him this time: Banks' single, "Hands Up," got a thumbs-down, inching no higher than No. 30 on the R&B list and 15 on the hip-hop roster. Worse, the CD drew yawning reviews. Its strongest potential selling point - as one of the few true New York gangsta albums in some time - made it seem only dated to hipsters.

Things have gone even worse for Ludicris' protégé Chingy. His latest CD, "Hoodstar," has plunged to No. 146 on Billboard's Top 200 with sales wheezing at 229,846. The St. Louis rapper's last work, "Powerballin'," sold almost 600,000 platters, while his 2003 debut, "Jackpot," nearly broke the 3 million mark.

The failure this time is something of a shock. The single, "Pullin' Me Back," got all the way to No. 1 on the R&B hip-hop chart and No. 9 on the Hot 100. Which means that even a hot song couldn't get fans to shell out for a full Chingy CD. Scary.

It's a similarly wan story for Eminem's bud Obie Trice. The good-natured rapper's debut, "Cheers," sold some 900,000 copies in 2003. But his chaser, "Second Round's on Me," left the charts after barely a month, having moved just over 170,000 copies. Obie suffered from a radio shutout, plus the perception of his work as a novelty. It's enough to make anybody hit the bar hard.

Then again, rap sales in general have plummeted this year. Other than the new Jay-Z juggernaut, "Kingdom Come" (which moved nearly 700,000 copies in its first week alone), the best seller (from T.I.) managed only to top 1.5 million copies.

To spread the pain to another genre, a once fast-breaking rock act has also seen its fortunes dim. The Aussie band Jet sold 1.6 million copies of its 2004 debut, "Get Born." But the foursome succumbed on the new "Shine On," which left the charts after grazing the 100,000 mark. While the guys managed a Top 10 hit on alternative rock radio, with "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is," fans sussed out that the song wasn't representative of the CD. Since the band's lead brothers suffered the loss of their dad in the last few years, they made "Shine On" a much more somber affair than "Get Born." This was supposed to be a deep, emotional work for Jet. Only problem is, fans liked it better shallow.

Jay jus started with the big numbers again.. i can almost guarantee when Em n 50 come out they gonna do hugeee numbers... until then.. i don't see no other artists doin' it big.. prob Nas... but i dno.. i think he's lost his selling potential and i can't picture him up at the top with 50 Em n Jay....

Like my homie told me today Nas is a HasBeen...He ain't selling shit... 50 and Em will sell less straight up... With 12 Millions dollars Jay-Z did 680k... And I believe that's the highest HipHop can go first week nowadays... But you know I think HipHop shouldn't focus on the first week sales ... Case like Chamillionaire makes me think that people still wanna buy hiphop albums but they want to see if your album got it... 1st, 2nd,3rd singles gotta be hot...

I wrote this in another thread, no1 is going to do numbers anymore because of the bootleggin shit. Im guilty of it too but its just the way it is. Only the big names like 50, Jay, Luda, Em, Game will do good sales because of the clout they already have. The people in the entourage like Banks, Obie, Memphis Bleek, or someone from black wallstreet like Juice, will have good albums but wont sell. I see on these message boards there a lot of takin sides rather than giving credit where credit is due. If its G unit, Game fans are sayin g unot and not buying or listening just for that matter or vice versa. Banks' album was good, real good in my opinion. He's different with his lyrics, he spits and it puts visuals to what hes saying, hes creative and you gotta respect it. ITS UP TO US TO MAKE HIP HOP GROW AND HAVE ARTISTS PUT OUT MUSIC WE WANT TO HEAR. IF WE KEEP BOOTLEGGIN, THEY ARE GONNA SELL OUT AND MAKE MAINSTREAM POP SHIT SO THEY CAN GET THE LITTLE KID AUDIENCE THAT WILL HAVE THEIR MOM BUY THE CD FOR THAT GAY ASS POP SONG.
