The body-rocking beat of hip hop reverberated beneath the vaulted ceilings of Princeton University’s largest lecture hall yesterday, marking the beginning of the politically-charged 2006 Hip Hop Symposium.
Moderated by political activist Jeffrey Johnson, the symposium featured a six-person panel composed of two academics, two activists, a rapper, and a politician. They advised the underground hip hop community, which shuns the sometimes misogynistic, materialistic tendencies of mainstream, modern hip hop, to take a larger role in politics. The discussion centered on hip hop’s response to Hurricane Katrina and September 11th briefly escalated to political critiques after panelist Rosa Clemente expressed dismay at the U.S. government’s "inadequate" reaction to Katrina. California Congresswomen Maxine Waters echoed Clemente’s disdain and then criticized President George W. Bush’s foreign policy. "We’re sitting here and the policies that we’ve developed around Iraq and Afghanistan are outrageous and ridiculous," she said. "Everybody should absolutely be out on the streets protesting that the President of the United States has not only lied to you but [also that] 3,000 soldiers are dead." Waters then described President Bush with an unprintable phrase. In response, the majority of the audience, consisting of students, faculty and townspeople, applauded. A few people rose from their seats. Waters quickly stated that she would not retract her Bush-disparaging statement as rapper Kanye West had done a year earlier, following his proclamation on national television that "George Bush doesn’t care about black people." "I’m not going to be like Kanye West. I’m not backing up. I said it," Waters said. The dialogue remained emotionally heated as it switched to hip-hop’s role in social and political arenas. Rosa Clemente, an organizer of grassroots political campaigns that give voice to African American and Latino groups, detailed her personal experience with the hip hop community after Katrina had devastated New Orleans. Ten days after Katrina hit, Clemente traveled to the New Orleans 9th ward, one of the poorest parts of the city, and found dead bodies floating in the flooded streets. She also broke into the Convention Center and saw bodies lying on the floor 12 days after the hurricane had hit. "Unless you’re African American or poor, you do not know what that experience was like in New Orleans," she said. "And last year, I was like, ‘I am going to go down there to cover this story from the hip hop perspective.’" Clemente showed concern that she and other hip hop activists, such as David Banner and Mos Def, remained at the frontlines of Katrina relief efforts yet failed to receive media attention. "We stepped up the plate, and we didn’t get nearly as much credit as these so-called ‘charity, do-good’ types of people," she said." Waters redirected the discussion by encouraging the hip hop community to channel its relatively quiet desires for societal change through the loud political mainstream. "I have been thinking a lot about the potential power of the hip hop community," she said. "There is a lot of potential power there to change the direction of this country." But everyone needs to unite organizationally and politically to better voice their concerns, she explained. Waters cited the City of Paterson, whose mayor was elected with less than 3 percent voter turnout, as a promising city on which to root hip hop activism and create political change. "The hip hop community ought to take this city’s council, the mayor’s seat, and then the city -- and start taking cities all over America by turning out votes," she said. Moderator Johnson stated that members of the hip hop community, especially African Americans, also need to increase political mobilization at public rallies. He estimated that at the recent Save Darfur Rally in New York City, only 100 out of 30,000 participants were African American. Cornel West, a pre-eminent author and scholar of African American culture, concluded the dialogue by highlighting why most mainstream hip hop artists, such as Ludacris and 50 Cent, do not publicly address issues of widespread concern, such helping the American poor. Most people in the spotlight are frightened to say anything controversial because their agents are telling them not to get embroiled in public controversy, said West. "[Rapper] 50 Cent is talented but he’s scared," he said. West argued that the hip hop community must overcome such fears while, at the same time, acknowledge that a firm grasp within the governmental system could create radical social change. "Above all, we still have to find some faith within this system," he added.

U know what I have to agggre with this dude cause niggas like 50, Kanye, Eminem and Jayz, have such a strong hold in not only hiphop but the youth and we all know who can change the world its the youth.
If them niggas start saying some positive message the youth will listen. 50 has the ear fo the young generation right now and if he say something the public will listen trust that. I think them niggas just dont want to get involve with the goverment, cause u talking about niggas that can hurt in anyway and get away with it. |
