Swollen Members Return With 'Black Magic'

Canadian Hip Hop act, Swollen Members, are gearing up for the release of their new album, Black Magic. Black Magic is the follow-up to 2003's Heavy. The album is set to drop on September 12th on Battle Axe Records.

Swollen Members is made up of emcees Madchild and Prevail, who are joined by DJ/Producer Rob The Viking. Moka Only, the group's designated hook master, has taken a leave of absence to focus on solo material, but still manages to contribute to the new record.

Swollen Members are currently giving fans a taste of the album with the track, "Too Hot," as well as the official single "Put Me On," which features Everlast, and is produced by Evidence of Dilated Peoples.

Black Magic was influenced by various life lessons learned by Swollen Members, one of which is to enjoy your work. Madchild says, "The most important lesson in life is to make sure you love what you do."

The new album contains 20 tracks geared towards Swollen Members original fan-base. Whereas Heavy was an attempt to capture top-spots on the pop charts, Black Magic is aimed to get back to Swollen Members' original sound.

"Something that we've always tried to do is experiment, and we really did that on our last project [Heavy], but we went in a direction that made us want to come back to our original style," says emcee Prevail. "On this album, we came back out the gates real hungry and real fierce."

After touring, and taking a break away from making music, Swollen Members knew it was time to come back, and come back with a new focus.

"There's a lot more to life than just getting ready to go to the club and sipping champagne and picking up girls and going in your hot tub. It's nice to have girls in your hot tub, don't get me wrong, and it's nice to have nice things, but there is more to life than that," adds Madchild...We took a long time making this album, a couple of years, and paid attention to detail and really found ourselves again."

Black Magic also contains guest appearances from Planet Asia, Evidence, and Phil Da Agony, as well as Ghostface Killah.

The group will also be hitting the road in the fall in support of Black Magic, and appears ready to start a new adventure. As Prevail says,

"It feels like the beginning of something brand new."
