Recently Lara Lavi, CEO of WIDEawake Entertainment Group purchased the Death Row catalog for 18 million dollars. This woman is unstoppable! She is an attorney, entrepreneur, CEO, producer, singer/songwriter, business development specialist, and mother. To say that she is well-rounded would be an understatement.
Yo! Raps was very excited to speak with Lara, and when we told her how honored we were to interview her, she humbly responded, "We're all just trying to get from A to B, right?" One thing is for sure, Lara has big plans for Death Row, a label that was home to many unforgettable artists such as Tupac Shakur, Snoop Dogg, Tha Dogg Pound, Warren G, and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes. Lara assured Death Row fans, many of whom may be concerned that the music will not be kept in its original state, that she's believes, "Like Motown, there is a definitive sound that came out of Death Row and...a definitive way things were produced," and she said, "It's important to be respectful of that." When asked what the complete picture of Death Row music is, Lara thoughtfully responded, "These are the original Boyz N The Hood -- some got out, some didn't, some lived, some died." Tupac Shakur's music depicts an era, one which was full of racial tension and social unrest. Lara stated, "To me, this is protest art of an era...This is militant request for social change...This is youthful eruption of expression of distrust of the man...all of that." Artists on the Death Row label, along with other Black Americans living in Compton, were "the product of a disenfranchised sector of society, and this sector was described quite accurately in the form of songs that came from Death Row." Lara believes it is immaterial that the rap music coming from Death Row was full of swear words because the music inspired social change, and according to Lara, "Whether it's the Malcolm X side or the Martin Luther King side -- raising concern either militantly or in a non-violent way -- raising concern allows for social change." It is no coincidence that Dr. Dre, Founder of Death Row, and Suge Knight, Former CEO of Death Row, both came from Compton. Dr. Dre came from the ghetto -- he lived it and he rapped about it. Suge Knight came from the ghetto -- he was sentenced to nine years in prison after violating the terms of his parole and he was known by many as a man prone to violence. However, as most children learn in school, you can't judge a book by its cover. Lara Lavi enthusiastically declared that it is a "New Day" for Death Row, and she is focusing on a "That way then, this way now" platform. According to Lara, great things are on the horizon for Death Row. She has a definite plan, one which includes "putting out box sets, compilations, and full on artist CDs." Lara also said that she is acting aggressively now "in placing this music in television, film, gaming, and advertising so that the sound is back out there in the collective consciousness." When we asked Lara whether she's encountered negative comments about her not being hardcore enough to do this, she responded, "Well...I mean, the people that were hardcore and from the hood went bankrupt." What Lara really cares about is achieving a win-win situation for everybody. As she put it, everytime she sits in a meeting, she looks at the other party and tries to determine, "What's their actual agenda, and how can we get them their agenda concurrently with our agenda." It is clear that this woman means business and that great things are in the stars for Death Row. Source-

She is ill. Well educated, dealing with integrity, and seems know a lot about the actual history of Death Row, she actually followed them. Good for her.
