Akon Attains Gold Status, Kanye West Returns To The Top 10

Akon’s third solo album, Freedom, officially went gold this week, while Kanye West managed to make his way back into the Top 10 on the Billboard 200 charts.

After sliding all the way down to no. 16 last week, Mr. West jumped to no. 8 this sales cycle. Despite moving up the charts, the sales for Ye’s 808’s & Heartbreak dropped 19% this week to 32,460, according to the Nielsen SoundScan. The Chicago rap superstar has scanned a total of 1,350,456 CDs after 13 weeks.

T.I. also climbed up the charts this week from no. 18 to no. 12, but just like Kanye, the ATL rap giant also suffered a drop in album sales one week after the expected Grammy bump. Tip’s Paper Trail moved 29,290 units, bringing his overall stats to 1,723,810.

Andy Sandberg’s group The Lonely Island fell 11 spots to no. 24. Incredibad, which boasts guest appearances from E-40, T-Pain and Justin Timberlake, managed to push 20,720 copies off the shelves this week, making its two-week tally stand at 68,257.

Akon, who debuted on the charts about three months ago, took home his third gold plaque this week. After selling an additional 18,900 discs this go around, Kon, who landed at the no. 30 position, was able to break the half a million mark by over 8,660.

Three slots down is Lil Wayne at no 33. After Tha Carter III went triple platinum last week, the CD’s sales dropped 35%. The multi-Grammy-award wining artist sold 17,660 units this week, which brings his total numbers to 3,029,770.

With new releases from Joe Budden, Mobb Deep’s Havoc, Project Pat and Somalia-born rapper K’Naan hitting shelves yesterday (Feb. 24), fans are curious who will make it onto the Billboard 200 next week. – Elan Mancini

Kanye's selling well still, but Akon has surprised me with how low his sales are. I think these tunes hav been the weakest he released, but im surprised mor folks havent picked it up.

Weezys selling more than a few cats do in their first week, and it's like 6 months after the release! JESUS
