Jennifer Hudson Steals The Show At 40th NAACP Image Awards

The 40th NAACP Awards went down in Los Angeles on Thursday (February 12) from The Shrine Auditorium, and it was singers Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson who stole the show.

Both took home trophies, and sweep the audience off their feet with individual performances. B won in the Favorite Female Artist category, but it was Hudson who garnered thunderous applause and a standing ovation after walking away with awards for New Artist, Outstanding Collaboration, and Best Album from her latest self-titled release.

"Now don't start me to crying again, y'all," Hudson said while accepting the award. "This is where we come from, so it's always an honor to come home and feel welcome and to feel the love. I really cherish this and appreciate it."

Additionally, "The Secret Life of Bees," which Hudson stars in, won for Best Motion Picture, while "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" was awarded Outstanding Comedy Series.

Other winners of the evening included Sean "Diddy" Combs, whole picked up the TV Movie Actor trophy for his role in "A Raisin in the Sun"; Taraji P. Henson for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"; Will Smith and Rosario Dawson for "Seven Pounds"; Jamie Foxx for Favorite Male Artist, and Taye Diggs and Angela Bassett for their supporting roles on "Private Practice" and "ER."

Russell Simmons was given the Vanguard Award later in the evening to honor his honor his achievements, while boxing legend Muhammad Ali won the President's Award.

The night's festivities came to a close with Stevie Wonder's performance of his 1976 song "Black Man." During the song, hosts Halle Berry and Tyler Perry recited the name-dropping refrain and added another person at the end: Obama. The audience enthusiastically raised tiny American flags in response.
