Rakim Blames New York For New York’s Dying State
Rakim, one of the legends of Hip-Hop, has attributed the lack of balance and possible death on Hip-Hop to his hometown of New York. Rakim made the proclamation about New York in an interview with Jenny Boom Boom of Hot 93.7 in Connecticut. “There is a certain realm of Hip-Hop [that is missing] and you might have to blame that on New York,” Rakim said. “New York is responsible for bringing that raw, that real gritty Hip-Hop, because we originated it.” He said there was hope, if the region got back to the staple sound that hit its zenith in the 80’s and 90’s. “New York and the East Coast, we gotta represent and do our part. And it’s OK for everybody else to do what they do. Then it will be a balance and everybody’ll be happy.” Nevertheless, the pioneering rap artist remained optimistic about the future for the genre. “I’m feeling good [and] optimistic and I’m hoping people understand that power that Hip-Hop got. I hope everybody understands the time we in right now, and I hope everybody wanna make some good music and keep Hip-Hop alive.” Rakim was hard pressed to pinpoint a savior to return rap to the Golden Era, but he said that it could happen through a unified movement. He aint lyin. No NY or East Cost rapper for that matter has really put out a dope "East Coast" album since GRODT. There is no more mafioso rap that Jay and Nas and Biggie made huge from Reasonable Doubt, Ready to Die and Life after Death or NaStradamus, Stillmatic. There aint no more of that hardcore East Coast gangsta rap that Mobb Deep, C-N-N, Big Pun, Fat Joe and others made huge. Wheres the mixture of hardcore gangsta rap and horrorcore that DMX made huge with his dark lyrics and stories?
The problem with hip hip and rap as a whole right now is there's no variety in the music. In the early 90s to even the early 00s there was all those different types of rap. Now every rapper has to follow the status quo which is make corny club songs that sound the exact same as other rappers songs, rap about drugs and money and sex. While those have allways been in rap the lack of variety is what's making those cliches seem so evident. What happened to all those hardcore beats and stories that went hand in hand? The best album from a East Coast rapper in years was eaisly H.N.I.C 2 because that had all those elements that defined rap in it's heydey. The damege is done with people downloading songs. There's no going back from that. Rappers need to really try to push those boundries creatively like they used to instead of making 7 or 8 hot songs on an album of 16 and make 16 hot songs. Those singles with T-Pain or Akon or the T-Pain voice recorder aren't sure hits. Out of every 10 singles using T-Pain recorders or having T-Pain in the song maybe 2 of them become actual hits. Artisit need to get back to building fanbases before releasing albums like they used to if they ever want to sell albums again. Look at Lil Wayne. His albums all came out when rap was still the most successful music in terms of sales but he never sold albums like crazy. His 3 most noted albums the Carter trilogy all came from him building his carrer up from scratch. Wether or not Gille wrote his stuff and gave him that new swagg it came through and him releasing material so he had a large fanbase did nothing but help him. I think he's a mdeiocre at times but mostly wack rapper but I respect his hustle and grind. Most people say his mixtapers were better then The Carter III and really they were but he built his fanbase up and that helped him. 50 used to do it, Game used to do it hell alot of rappers used to do it. These rappers need to start building their reps up even if they were once or are big artist by relaisng material enough so by the time their album comes out people will expect alot and will possibly buy your album instead of downloading 6 songs off Limewire or Frostwire. tk is speaking the truth not only the artist but the record labels need to get behind different artist projects to diversify whats on the radio . ans say to hell wth making cash for once and just get back to the fundamentals of hip hop which is story telling djs being important and the occasional battle on wax not all out beef just say what you got to say and keep it moving, dancing and stuff is cool but not for everyone and all this biting of each others style was somewhat ok but they are taking that singing and autotuning to far
