Blu Gives "Keys To The City" A Look At His Rhymes
December 24th, 2008 | Author: Andres Tardio

The recipient of last year’s Rookie of the Year award for HipHopDX was Blu [click to read], who took time to release two new efforts in 2008. With this year almost coming to a close, Blu has teamed up with Imeem, HipHopDX, 2DopeBoyz and Urb magazine to film the "Keys 2 The City" [click here] series.

This video series has shown Blu speak on various topics already. In the latest installment, one half of Johnson & Jonson [click to read] broke down his view of his own rhyme style and he managed to dissect one of the songs off his latest group effort with Mainframe.

“I realize I can make personal records. Below the Heavens [click to read], the whole album was personal,” he said in the video.

Sticking to that trend, Blu also wanted to make personal records other people could relate to.

“I wanted to relate to other people. Every line related to me. Every line was something out of my life. Every single line! But, every line, someone else can relate.”

He went on to spit a few bars from the song, ending by adding that he put a lot into the verses.

”It was everything that was in me, at the time. Which isn’t much,” he added before explaining his view of his rhyme style.

“I feel like I have a simple perspective and I just explain it in a way that people can digest it. I don’t think it’s anything deep or conscious or really moving. There’s a lot of real ill shit that goes down in the world. This is simple shit that a lot of people relate to.”

According to different reports, Blu is working on a solo album and has plans to work with Exile once again, to create the follow up to their 2007 album Below the Heavens.
