Killer Mike Compares Hustle To Talent, Criticizes Fans
November 21st, 2008 Killer Mike [click to read] has made a name for himself as an outspoken artist in rap. Recently, he sat down to share his thoughts on everything from Soulja Boy [click to read] to his own status in the Hip Hop world, admitting his faults and problems with fans. Mike also went on to emphasize his thoughts on why rap fans are "lazy" and how people are caught up in the "fantasy" of it all. "I think in every business, ambition will outweigh talent if you don't marry ambition with talent," Killer Mike recently told the Urban News Network. "I don't get a lot of radio spins, even here in Atlanta," he added. "But, I'm a presence musically here because I refuse to be denied." "I know I gotta work as hard as a Soulja Boy. I love Soulja Boy. I love any 17 year-old kid who says 'I can sell crack or I can stay here, make music in my bedroom and put it on YouTube. I respect that! As a business man, I respect that! I respect the fact the fact he puts together good jingles. His songs are great jingles, and his songs are in a tradition of southern dance music," he noted before comparing him to the likes of 2 Live Crew. Killer Mike went on to acknowledge his actual problem with the game and how laziness contributes to it. "The problem I have is with people complaining that good music isn't out there. See, the rap audience has gotten really lazy. Thirty year-olds don't buy rap music. They just complain about it." “When I say they don’t buy rap music, they don’t buy catalogs. They don’t buy N.W.A. I can tell you five other groups that was hotter the time N.W.A. was out. ‘Cause I bought Section 8 Mob, The Dayton Family, I bought The Geto Boys. They played none of that music on the radio. I was just serious about rap music because rap music spoke to my conditions.” Later, he continued to lay blame on rap fans who he feels are impressionable. "As a listening audience, we're caught up in the fantasy. We think that if we can buy a watch that looks like Jesus, we're Jesus!" Finally, Mike went on to speak on his way of seeing the lack of diversity in the game. "We have to raise our level of expectations! I bought Too Short and A Tribe Called Quest the same day! The same day! I bought the guy who gave you 'Bonita Applebaum' [click to read] and the guy who gave you "Biatch!' the same day!" His latest offering, I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind II is out now. It was released earlier this year to critical praise. Source: hiphopdx
