Default 50 Cent Teams Up With Jam Master Jay's Cousin To Release Documentary

50 Cent Teams Up With Jam Master Jay's Cousin To Release Documentary

Published: Tuesday - October 28, 2008
Words by Ronnie Gamble

Although he's already got a movie that is scheduled to drop alongside his upcoming album, Before I Self Destruct, 50 Cent has signed on for another film project that will come packaged in deluxe editions of the upcoming album, reports MTV.

The film project is a documentary centered around the late Run DMC member, Jam Master Jay. It's titled "Two Turntables and a Microphone," and has been in the making for nearly five years by Jay's cousin, Phonz (real name: Stephon Watford).

"It's intense," 50 told MTV of the documentary.

The film celebrates the life of Jam Master Jay, his time in the music biz with Run DMC and beyond, as well as his untimely passing.

"It's Jam Master Jay's life story man, telling what happened to him," Phonz told BallerStatus.com earlier this year. "I was born and raised with Jam Master Jay and Run DMC, traveled around the world with him, and now we doing this movie. I created the movie to be like a tribute, man, just to tell who Jam Master Jay was."

According to 50 Cent, he came aboard after filming an interview about Jay for the documentary. He is now serving as executive producer for the project. But, it's more than just business for the hip-hop mogul. He learned a lot of Jam Master Jay early in his career, and he hasn't forgotten about it.

"He was somebody who impacted my career -- you can say in the biggest way," 50 explained to MTV. " 'Cause in my career, I was just in the infant stages, developing my song structure around Jay. The first time I was in the studio, [it was] with intentions of recording songs for an album with Jam Master Jay. He taught me how to count bars. I could rap already. I knew what I wanted to say, but he was showing me how I had to get it out around the right time. [He would say,] 'That sounds crazy, you have to say it earlier in this verse.' "

Jay was gunned down six years ago in a Queens recording studio. Much like the murders of other late great rap artists, there are several theories about what happened and who was behind it. However, the case remains unsolved.

50 doesn't believes there's more to the murder as well, and he feels "Two Turntables and a Microphone" helps to make things a little clearer.

"It's not a random act of violence," 50 opined. "People just don't walk in your studio, shoot and kill you with several other people around, and no one knows anything. I believe the documentary sheds light on it -- a little bit. It creates a clearer picture of what actually happened at that point. People just heard, 'Jam Master Jay got shot.' They don't understand the circumstances. [The film] creates some clarity."

The documentary will be available alongside 50's Before I Self Destruct album, via limited copies, when it is released on December 9th.
